Flathead bait

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone would share what types of live bait they use for flatheads in the croix. I want to try it a couple times this year and I got a few good looking spots picked out but not sure about the bait. Any help appreciated.

Now I don't fish for flatheads but I do remember reading and hearing that the flathead is more of a predator than it is a scavenger.I'd go with some good sized live suckers or other big minnows on the bottom. As a kid I remember some old-timers catching some huge ones out of that river.Good Luck.

I prefer BIG suckers. Muskie size that generally run about $2 apiece. Have gotten several Faltheads 30-50+ lbs on them.

I have heard bullheads are good bait too, but I haven't tried them.

The livlier the better.

When targeting big cats I've had lots of luck using BIG sucker minnows, the bigger the better. If you don't mind shelling out a little cash, and you can find them, try a spearing sucker. You might be better off catching your bait. I would assume a big shad or chub would work just as well. I don't think cats are too particular about what their meals taste like.

We used to use goldfish in Kansas. They are not legal in MN!!! Neither are Sunfish - another great flathead bait.

I don't know about MN, but in WI you can use sunfish as long as they are caught out of the same body of water.
