Hello ALL!!

Well, I am starting to get busy with this years Trout Day, so it must be getting close!

I am still in the process of solidifying guest speakers and other details etc.

I am hoping to have all taken care of by mid week(next week),let's hope!?

I hope you can make it!?
The weather will be as good as last year, the door prizes more prevelant, the fishing information more detailed and encompassing.

Be prepared to win an evening(that evening out fishing with yours truly, fishing for some mongo brown trout!)

Update:

AN addition to the (if I may say so) fine collection of door prizes,

Mel Dickie, located in Wild Goose Sports in Rochester,Mn is graciously willing to donate
another rod this year for Trout Day.

As of late, Mel's health hasn't been the greatest, but he didn't hesitate to make the offer! As a friend and a Master rod builder, I thank you again Mel for your donation!

If the chance of winning one of Mel's rods isn't incentive enough to check out Trout Day, I don't know what else is??

Maybe I should put my name in the hat, so I can bend one of Mel's fine works of art!!!LOL

Update:

Both Rochester Culver's restaurants, locally owned and operated, have graciously decided to sponsor this years Trout Day.

Now with a South location, to and from fishing streams in SE MN you can hit'em up for some fine food!!! Yes I'll plug them! Not only for their sponsorship directly, but for any business that is willing to go out on the limb for good causes. Especially a business that supports concerns related to SE MN streams and rivers.

WHen you do stop in, ask for Steve(owner), if he isn't swamped I bet he would love to talk trout fishing!!!

Try the Philly steak basket, my personal fave!!!!!!

Thanks again Steve!!!!!!!

Clemetson's resort has donated a two day stay at their fine fishing destination and Bruce Mosher from Today's Tackle has donated some gear as well!!

I sure hope a few of you out there can make it this year!!?

It's less than 2 weeks away!!!!!

Keep the rods bendin'!!!

Jim, you do a very good job at keeping us posted for trout day. It sounds like it will be a good time. I think I'll keep that day open and stop down there. Thanks

Jimmy,
Thanks for the kind words! I've put quite a bit of time into this. If I get a good enough response this year, I will continue in the future, increasing the format with more presentations, seminars etc.

I had to somewhat gage it on last years attendance. Being the first year last year, things have already improved. Increased door prize donations, scheduled agenda and hopefully attendance!

See you there! I'll be the guy all excited, doing a lot of talking!!!

If you wondering, the event will be held, rain, snow or shine! There is an indoor section to the pavilion if need be. Let's hope the forecast changes!!

Hi Jim W,

We're planning to bring the kids (after an 8:00am soccer game), who have recently caught the fishing bug. I had the privilege to work with Steve about 10 years ago, and am pleased to see the Culver's sponsorship (and success).

See ya Saturday!

Hi Ted,

Look forward to having you at Trout Day. Currently I have Minn Aqua scheduled for the afternoon, but recently asked if they could have youth fishing stuff going on through out the day. Otherwise, things don't really get going until 10:00am. I personally don't know how long a youth soccer game lasts. I do know that it takes about 45 minutes from Rochester to get to the park!

Pray for warmer air!!

Well, with this interesting weather forecasted for Saturday, I imagine some of you would rather stay indoors?

ANyway, for those of you who do make it I plan on getting the coals stoked in the Pavillion's fireplaces. There is an indoor section and an open air section ,to keep warm/warm up or come out of any inclimate weather. You notice I didn't say the "r" word?(plus the less people there, the better chance of winning a door prize!HEHEHEHHE)

If any one has any more questions, post'em!!

Wastewaterguru, you can find maps to all easements for trout streams at the DNR site.

Go to fishing, then find the heading "Fishing water", Then "Southeasterm trout steams.

Not as nice as having one in your hands but all the info is there.

Hey Fish, you going down tomorrow? Stop by the campground if you get the chance! I'll be there with Jeremy and a friend of mine with his son too.
The fire won't be so smart this time cause my son already knows everything!

It might be a little like early April but the trout love an overcast sky! I'm pumped!...See you guys there!

Hey Guru, Let me know if you need a place to camp.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
