G-man

What are the ice conditions on Miltona - West end bay?

I've got the ice fishing itch.

java there's been a lot of wind, so the big waters have not locked up tight...there is a good chance the west bay has ice...and may even be fishable by the weekend...i'll check it out and let everyone know...

G-man did you get out on Sunday? It was good to talk to you on Saturday at the store. We went out on the west bay Saturday evening and managed to keep 5, and as always missed a few others. It wasn't fast action, but it was enough to keep you interested. Ice in the bay was around 4" give or take a little, it was unbelieveable how clear that ice was.

Believe it or not, the most fun was walking back into the landing when we were done fishing. We were holding lanterns while walking in, and with the ice being so clear you could see bottom plain as day. And not just bottom, we counted 6 walleyes, 1 northern, and 1 we couldn't identify while walking back in. And we're talking shallow water, I'm guessing 4 to 8 feet. Anyway, I just thought I'd share that interesting walk back in. Good luck and be safe everyone.

Anderland,
I heard there was a nice crowd out there on Saturday....must have been too windy Sunday..nobody around. Went out and popped a couple hole for my father in law....you're right...really clear ice...you're standing on five but it looks like 2 inches!....Saw one nice fish under the ice in about 3 feet of water...then followed a muskrat around a bit! No fish for me yet...but the season is early!

watch the ice with the warm weather this week...Victoria opened up yesterday...

be safe everyone!

Anderland,

At what depth of water were you fishing? If you don't mind, what was your persentation? I have a few days of vacation to burn, maybe I'll head up for a few days.

G-man,

Thanks for looking into this for me. The ice in Southern MN is a bit thin. Lake George has about 4", and I found one ice angler in mud bay on Lake Washington Saturday.

See you in the bait shop.

Java,

As a normal starting point we were fishing 18 to 22 feet on the edge of the weedline. The outer weedline on Miltona runs at a pretty constant 18 feet around the lake. Presentation, set lines and tip-ups accounted for all of our fish. Jigs did absolutely nothing, the fish were not aggressive whatsoever. And when fish hit they didn't run like normal first ice aggressive fish, they were very finicky - so be patient. And Ghotierman, yeah there was definitely a good crowd out there on Saturday evening. But I'm just wondering after my walk if everyone was fishing too deep after dark...makes you wonder at least. Oh well, it's fun when it keeps you guessing!

G-Man,

I was just wondering what the ice conditions are on Miltona or Ida? Also, have you heard if anyone is caughting anything walleyes on Miltona or Ida? Which lake is better for early ice? Thanks for the input.

To call this summer "busy", would be the understatement of the year for me.....

Been out of town for most of my fishing as well.  Looking forward to being in the boat around home in the coming weeks.  It’s just never for the amount of hours I get on board for the out of town trips.  More like 2-4, maybe 6 hours at best here.  Never the marathon 12-15 hour days I’ve been blessed to have a few times this season so far. I did just walk down to the river to make a few casts for my evening fix and picked up a 17.5 smallie on a Pop R.  That’ll have to do for today. 😉

Was up on the big V for the last week with the family.  First time for all of us on the lake.  And for a newbie, it was really tough fishing all week long.  We did better than every group we talked to in our resort, but that is not saying much.  Because of weather and other things, we fished for on 5 days, and managed just about 5 limits of Walleye total.  Was a great week to be on the lake though, what a beautiful lake, and everything else was awesome.  Just need better information for next visit.

Thanks for the compliment.  I've been up in the Cass Lake area the past few weeks.  Did very well on eyes but really struggled to find the crappies and I wasn't alone.

This surprises me Borch.  5-6 years ago when I was  living in the St. Cloud area, if you looked up "Mr. Consistency"  in the dictionary, your mugshot would come up.  Things must be all whacked out.

I am a catfish guy, but until now, i was unaware that i can legally use small bullheads for bait. However, I have never actually targeted them before, so i am just wondering if anyone knows of any "hotspots" for bullheads (if there is such a thing)

Pretty quiet in here.  I've been fishing out of town the past 2 weeks.  Hope to fish the area lakes this week.  Heard reports of a good day crank bite on the chain but not much else.  With the full moon coming up this week may try some evening trolling.  Anyone else having any luck?

Haven’t fished the river for weeks and came home to high, muddy water so I doubt I will for another week.  I’d focus on shorelines and whatever backwater I could find at this time if I did go.

It was slow for me Tuesday afternoon and Thursday in Frazer / Smarts Bay. Wednesday was very good in 20-25 feet leeches / crawlers on a Lindy or a jig. Absolutely beautiful weather!

My wife and I had a good morning on Friday with bottom bouncers, spinners and crawlers in 20-24 ft.  Caught 9, threw back 3 18-19 in, 2 13-14 in.
