Hey was wondering if Geneva is doing pretty good right now and where to get on the lake. I have yet to pull up a map or get one of it and will be trying sometime during the day. My brother and i are coming up from the cities to pick up and ice house and are deciding to try it out for a late night bite.

Seems with Genevas size, ice should be safe, and the size, should be "somewaht" easier to find some fish(Who knows on that last point though). Anyway, is there a park or just a public access that is the way to walk on the lake and if so, is fishing decent around those areas then? We will need a bait shop too, come to think about it, where would be the closest one?

ANy help is appreciated. We are going to have a Frabil XLTtwin and will probably be looking like idiots out there, ha just kidding, but might have a beer for whoever. Thanks.

Catchin Whopper...stop in here and we'll help get you set up... There is a public access on the North end of Geneva that is just down the road from our shop. Easy to get on and out to some decent spots in the north bay...should be some crappie action within easy reach...the 'eyes might take a bit more of a march. The other access is on the south east side (right next to my house!) Here you can easily walk out to the breakline and get on some early 'eyes. There are three permanent shaks there now, and one fella has been out there before sunrise every morning this week! (Figure his bite is on, or just wants out of the house! smile.gif )

Give a call when you get to town, and someone here can help you out with a map and directions....bait, etc. (we've got the nuclear waxies featured in In-Fisherman!)

good luck and good fishing!

ghotierman,
Thanks for the response. S**T, my brother just emailed me and said the guy that was planning on selling his shack to us for the last 2 weeks was going to keep it now. Dang, we are pretty unhappy with it since we were really looking forward to getting up there tomorrow. We are going to stick around the cities tomorrow instead, but i ahve fished the chain in the summer and love the area. I intend to get up there in the coming weeks to try the fishing out, will definitely stop by, thanks for the response, we are just pissed we can't make it up there now! Oh well, that is how it sometimes goes. Thanks for the input.

  • 3 weeks later...

I use to fish this lake as a kid in the 60's
& 70's. Grandparents had a resort on this
lake. We use to catch a lot of nice
crappies. Biggest was 1 pound nine ounces.
We use to go in front of the tabernacle.
Walleyes in front of the current resort.
This lake was awesome back then, basically
unknown. I never saw more than a few boats
on the lake, and that was on weekends. There
was no public access, had to come through a
very tight channel from lake victoria or
la homme deu (sp?) There's a deep hole in
the middle, I think it's over 80 feet. We
caught fish around the entire shoreline.
Sorry for the long post, spent a lot of time
up there in my youth.

catch22....it's still an awesome lake...and not overly pressured. Some nice pike, and great bass fishing...first ice walleyes can be magic...and the panfishing off the dock is great!

It's built up around the shore more than you may remember, but it is still a gem in the chain.

welcome to fishingminnesota!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
