Crappies

Hi, I mostly fish on Geneva, Victoria. Have not had much luck with crappies. I am hearing from talking to others that the crappies are just starting to spawn. If that is the case where should I be looking for them. Or maybe I should try some smaller lakes for now. Any info wold be helpful

Crappies usually spawn when the water temp. hits 60-65 degrees. I was out on a few different lakes today walleye fishing and the surface temp was 64 degrees at each lake. I would say they are spawning now or maybe just about done. Try and find a gravel area 4-6' water near a weedline/dropoff and you should be able to locate fish. The big females lay the eggs in the gravel and the males guard the eggs afterwards. Usually if you can locate them, there are hoards of them, tremendous schooling fish.

I have had some success on Carlos on the north end near the State Park. I fished the pencil weeds in early June last year and found some crappies were in the weeds and some were just on the outside. They appeared to be spawning, I let some big ones go. Another good area is on Le Homme Dieux Lake to the north of the swimming beach, near the pencil weeds. I haven't fished Geneva or Victoria yet, hope to try this year. The same general spots should work accordingly, I would think.

I am going out for some sunfish tomorrow weather permitting. Are they still spawning? I won,t get out until about 7:00 pm. Should I look for islands or fish weedlines? I will probley try Geneva.
