I know how serious this virus is even when when caught early. The fact that it was misdiagnosed and time wasted really knocks down the odds of recovery.
God Bless You Gene.

i would have posted this sooner, but i was afraid to jinx him. i talked to gene saturday. he is much improved, and looking to be discharged yesterday (sunday).
this is the tricky part. i have not heard from him yet, to know if he actually made it home for sure, but he sounded so much better, and was very confident he would be going home. thank you all again for the support you showed him.
he is very grateful to be still walking around on this earth, and being able to still have opportunities to p!$$ off old putz grin.gif not always that hard, i know smile.gif
he should be up and about, and gaining strength.
gambler, if you see this, drop a note when you feel up to it, and let us know how you are doing here.

Hi everyone, finally got home from the hosital on Sunday and have in home nursing set up.I really want to thank all of you for your kind thoughts, prayers and cards. They meant so much. I will try to keep this from being too long but would like to tell you about this nightmare. The Saturday night before Easter I was released from the hospital with assurances from all the doctors that all the results from the spinal tap had been completed and it was confirmed I had viral meningitis and that in several weeks it would run it's course and all would be OK. I left the hospital Easter morning about 10 am. That Thursday my doctor called me and told me to get to his office immediately. When I arrived he told me someone put a positive bacterial report in my folder about an hour befor I left the hospital and noone was told. It just sat there until wednesday when a clerk filing the insurance papers discovered it and blew the whistle. I went straight to the hospital and had another spinal tap done and was admitted. It was confirmed I had Staph Aures Meningitis, a very fast moving and deadly desease. They began pumping nafcillan (anti-biotics) every four hours in large doses. Over the next 10 days, every test humanly possible was conducted making sure it was being brought under control. Two days before I was released my doctor asked me if I knew how many patients he had with this desease survived and I said probably very few. He said ZERO. You can imagine what went through me when he said that. I thought it was a party with the Grim Reaper. Seems like the BIG CRAPPIE FISHERMAN IN THE SKY had other plans. Last ice fishing season I was having problems with my left hip and underwent therapy for a month. The orthapedic surgeon I was going to said we should try pain management before considering any type of surgery and I agreed. I recieved epideral treatments three time over the next month. (treatment similar to spinal taps). Very little relief was realized and the pain specialist did a caudal block (under anesthesia a catheter is inserted through the tail bone and into the spine) to inject the discs. Two days later I began getting sick and the nightmare began. All the doctors that treated me in the hospital are convinced the pain management doctor was the cause of it all. This desease must be introduced into the spine. Come to find that doctor already killed a 46 year old man. His family sued and was awarded 6 million. I think I will be seeking the services of that attorney in the near future. I carry a bag with anti-biotics around the clock. Next Wednesday I'm scheduled for another spinal tap to check the fluids again and if all is OK, I can discontinue the anti-biotics next Friday. The ant-biotics are administered through a central line in a large vessel in my neck. Hope this was not too laboring and again I want to thank all of you for your kindness. Hope to see you at the IBOT fistival.

Gambler ... I'm at a loss of words.

I'm glad all has gone well and you pulled the wild card to make it through this nightmare. I wish you a speedy, full recovery.

I am a survivor of Spinal Meningitis myself. I contracted the illness when I was an infant... my 1st chrstmas and new years I layed in a hospital with a temp of 108 degrees. I obviously survived where the doctors didnt think I would. My entire life has been effected by the aftermath of the disease(brain was BBQ'd) which effected my nervous system, nerves, hearing(80% loss over time), and short term memory.... or to make it short, I dont hear well, I dont feel as much as I should, and my temper is short... but its a good trade to have a chance to live life.

Look at it the good way, if you get some of the same future syptoms/after effects I have... Short temper allows one to leave and go fishing sooner, bad hearing will allow you to ignore the cell phone when someone calls and wants you to come home, and the decreased feeling ... it hurts less when you get impailed by the dorsal fin of a crappie... and the memory .. you sometimes may forget what time your wife wanted you home from fishing .. now you have a legitament excuse.

Good Luck on the rest of your recovery. The worst part is behind you.. just be sure to take care of yourself until this stuff is gone.

Gambler - Happy to hear you're doing so well. Bacterial meningitis is a real bast*** to treat. I think you may want to get those lab records you referred to earlier, though. Laboratory staff are required to report all positive bacterial cultures to a doctor and document the notification "...results called to Dr. Madison." or something similar. Sounds like someone dropped the ball on you. As a doctor I discourage wreckless litigation (Illness and complications are a natural part of health care and are often unavoidable) but there's a red flag flying on this one. Happy clamping. (Has anyone gotten Meningitis from clamping yet - sterilize that sucker!) grin.gifwink.gif

I just read Gambler's post and a thought occurred to me. I look back at all the little things the Triangle has done to us and cost of such things, and then the payback that the Great Crappie Fisherman in the Sky gave back to keep the Gambler around to rip some more lips, and I say "Payback in Full!!!"

good to hear you are on the mend, Gambler!

Indeed, it would be wise to sterilize. The clamp should be cleansed with alcohol, but where in the temple would one find that?

P.S. God bless and good luck on your FULL recovery Gambler!

i wanted to once again thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers, and to ask you to keep on thinking of gene. we found out this weekend, that a tumor that was found on his femor bone in the region of his hip, which was ironicaly the start of this whole mess, as that is why he got the block injection in his spine, for a pain he has been having in his hip most of the winter as far as i know, and that is where it is thought the bacterial infection started in the first place, anyway we found out that the tumor is indeed cancerous. he had surgery yesterday, and is recovering now. he is awaiting the test results, and we are hoping to hear that the cancer was confined to that one place on the bone.
i have not talked to him for a week, and i will not bother him for a few more days. he will at the very least have to undergo radiation treatment, and he still has to recoup from the hip surgery. he will be laid up for a while longer.
i just wanted to let all you who care know what his status was as of late. he really does appreciate your support. it means the world to him. us too.
thanks, jigglestick

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
