Thanks for the report, Legend. Were you with the crowds there at Pine Point? I have had some bad experiences there myself...
Anyway...This Friday, I am going up to Leech for a full week and a half. I will provide a report of my own when I come back...

Fished Leech the 17th and 18th with some success. Water temp still at or below 52. Last year at this time it was 59.
We ended up with our limits, but had to work. Shallow is your best choice right now. We caught everything in 5'-10' on the windblow side. Jig/shiner or Lindy/leech were the top two presentation.
Look for the bite to improve as we get warmer temps and sunshine.
(note: The boat crowds can be brutal. Some folks are decent, but there is a small percentage that are downright rude. Be patient and ignore these clowns.)
Worked Portage Bay on the 17th and 18th around 5 Mile, the Gap, and on the west side by the campground. Water temp between 48-51 degrees. We covered lots of water and ended up with only 2 'eyes and 6-7 pike (the 'eyes were in 12'-15'). After not feeling my nose for 2 days because of the wind and cold, I decided to spend Sunday on Mille Lacs. Fished 2 hrs and pulled 14 'eyes (3 keepers). I truly love Leech, but that's my kinda fishin'.

jester,
We be in that Pine Point crowd. We fished the windblown side of the point in 5'-8'. Most boats seemed to be straight out from the point in 10'.
If you want the GPS coordinates, e-mail me at [email protected]

legend-
If you don't mind sending me some coords I would appreciate it. I am heading up this weekend for a few days before I head to Canada for a week. I have only fished Leech in the winter so having a place to start on the open water would be great. Thanks.
SKI

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
