I am a newcomer to Leech and will be up the second week of June. I will be staying at Andersons Cove on Steamboat Bay. Does anyone have any tips, advice or info on the fishing in this part of the Lake?

Hooked,
What are you looking to fish for? Once we get that we can probably give you a few good spots. smile.gif
------------------
Paul
[email protected]
[This message has been edited by Pwaldow123 (edited 05-16-2002).]

The best piece of advice I could give anyone, who’s never fished Leech before, would be to hire a guide for the first day.
If you want to try it alone, let us know what size boat you’ll be using and if you have a GPS.
I am not too picky, I fish for whatever is biting. Perch, crappie, walleye, northern, bass, none of them would hurt my feelings as long as I have some fish to take home from the trip. I have a 17' deep-v, but no GPS (yet). Thanks in advance for any help.

Unless you travel about 20 miles by water to the east (Boy Bay, Headquarters, east of Bear Island) you've got the best bass fishing on Leech right there in Steamboat.
If you are not particular what you catch, work the weedlines with spinner baits -- you'll catch bass and northerns. In the really heavy stuff (bass havens) you'll need to throw something like a Moss Boss or maybe Johnson silver minnow.

Throw spinnerbaits in the middle bullrush patches in the bay. go up into sucker bay as the bass fishing is far superior to steamboat. walleyes may be on crawlers by then. goose island flats with a good wind can be awesome. rock bass will be strong by then and they are big on leech. many people come here just for them.
hiring a guide can really help on a new body of water, I do that when i go somewhere new.
good luck and have fun.
------------------
LEECH LAKE FISHING
Learn techniques for success!
Jim F.
1-800-278-4080
cigar lit fish on!
[email protected]

Thanks for the info. I will probably have a GPS by the time I get up there, does anyone have even more specific info? I do not have a map yet but plan on getting a Hot Spots. Is this bay full of weeds and cover? I understand that a deeper channel runs through it, do the fish congregate around the channel at all?

For the most part Steamboat Bay is 7~8’ deep and certain sections of the Bay can be full of weeds.
There really isn’t a deeper channel that runs through Steamboat Bay. However, there are a string of very nice holes on the east side of the bay, starting at Mounds Point that continue due north, almost in a straight line. There is also a small hole on the NNW side of Minnesota Island but unless you have a GPS, it’s almost impossible to locate. Fish do have a tendency to congregate in these holes.
btw – We’re going up on 6/24 for 8 days and even after fishing Leech for 10+ years, we’ve booked a guide for our 1st day. When I get back I’ll post and report and if you purchase a GPS before you're trip, I can provide you with some excellent waypoints.
You can email me at - [email protected]
Central America. Focus. We almost went for a local overnight crappie run but the daughter’s septic froze so I got to work the brown trout pond through a 4 inch hole. It was opener today afterall. 😉

Ok, how did we get from crappies and freezing temps to pond slime eaters in south America? Focus! 🙄

The locals there shoot ducks but don't hunt them. If they see a bunch on a pond they'll sneak up and water swat them but it's strictly for food not sport. My buddy runs an outfitter so him and I will hunt a few days and scout then I'll help him with a group whose coming mid week. He's from there. Hoping he can come to Canada next year with me. He's never seen or shot a goose

Awesome kind of trip! I figured there would be a local benefit if you couldn’t bring them back (not saying you can’t). Having a connection down there is pretty cool! We donated a good share of meat to the village in Kotzebue, AK instead of shipping it all back. Pretty pricey and they really appreciated it. Win/win.

I don't bring them back, eat a lot then clean them for the village. Some like them plucked and some like the breasts cut out. It's really remote where I go and the locals live off the land. I know they want me to go get some doves for them too. My buddy is a local so we'll probably go get a deer as well for some venison for some of the elders in the community
