You might want to move deeper. The biggest eye I've ever caught on Leech nailed a shinner ~35 feet deep.

Yep sounds like your a west side guy. Me to on opener. The other options for me are the flats, snake pit, grandview a hand full of other no-name flats. They can be hot and no pine point crowd. But , last year I started on the flats and wasted 3 hours on just a couple fish. Then it was off to a point. Yep, pine point and caught alot of fish. The thing about pine point is its alot biger then the group of boats. That may seem hard to believe if you have seen it on opener,as you know but there is lots of 10 to 12 ft water to east and to the west.
What happens is if its not a hard wind the traffic will move the fish off the point and there is 1/2 mile or more of good water both east and west.
Could go on and on but I won't..
Good luck

What would you do if on Saturday after catching a few walleyes in 8 feet or so on Fireball/shiner or Lindy rig the fish stop? We usually fish with a crowd on Pine Pt, Stoney PT or one of the Hardwoods depending on the wind. We then hunt 4-5 different spots only to see others doing the same fruitless thing. Any other ideas to add to our bag of tricks to do a little better. Thanks.

We usually start at Pine Point also since we stay at a resort on that shoreline. But we usually move over to Hardwood or around Goose Island if there isn't a lot of action. Last year I saw one boat that was rip jigging on the point and they were outfishing everyone else. I might try that this year. I have a charcoal colored Trophy 170 with a 90 hp Johnson. We'll have 3 guys in the boat this year -- say hi if you see us on the water. If anyone has a CB, we could pick a chanel and talk out on the water. Good luck.

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
