I live near this lake and it can be greta in the spring. Good news for you is it may still be spring in June. But after the spring bite your time will be better spent fishing eyes an hour or so before dark, and after dark. A good spot is the shore line running north from sunset point. Follow the 15 to 20 ft break line with a lindy and a leech. After dark tie on floating rap (#9) and move into 5 to 7 ft along the same shoreline.
If you have to go out during mid day, there is one hump on the lake. It is right in the center and tops out 20 to 25 ft.
Good luck

There is also a sand bar straight out in front of the dirt road on the north end, go out from where the road comes to the lake. The road then turns and follows the north shore, I spent my whole childhood fishing this break line. The sand bar is right in front of the 90 degree turn, in about 12ft. There is also a pile of old Christmas trees that were planted about twenty five years ago directly in front of the biggest white pine on the north shore, don't know how they got there. haha I had a 55 gal drum full of rocks for our boat, out there also. Had a lot of laughs at the people that would hook it and spend time fishing that area because they thought a big one broke their line. It is a tough lake, if the temps are warm hit the island mentioned in the previous post. You can find that by heading south straight out from that road I was telling you about. Unless something has happened to the lake level, it topped out at about 17ft when I was a kid.

thanks for the info guys. i live on devils lake in north dakota and i sit here today looking at 6 inches of snow that fell last nite. my boat has been hitched to my truck for 10 days waiting for spring.
i will be meeting a group of about 10 friends at garfield for our annual get-together which we have done for about 15 years. i took the traveling trophy last year with a 7.5 walleye but they sold the resort we used to go to at perham, mn. and now only rent for the season. always fun trying a new lake. thanks again

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
