well it was bound to happen. the triangle tried to eat one of our very own, bryce!!i'not sure exactly of the details, i'm sure he'll make up some kind of story for damage control. i knew the power was going to be stronger this season, and here's the proof. friday night after we got set up on the lake, kelly came by and said that fellow over there is bryce, can he set up by you guys? sure have at it. i didn't see hide nor hair of him til saturday morning during breakfast, when he knocked at our door. he came in introduced himself as bryce. my first thought was he was at the bar the night before, some body told him shut up, and he thought they said stand up shocked.gif this guy was a wreck! half his face was missing!i asked what happened? he told me he was in his fish house the night before, minding his own buisiness, when all of a sudden there was this rumble, the ice started to shake, and as fast as you could imagine a water spout came up out of the ice hole. as he described it it was sort of like an upside down tornado! it grabbed him by the head and sucked him down into the hole. it couldn't get him through the hole. thank god he didn't have a 10 inch auger! it slammed him into the hole again and again, until for some unknown reason it stopped! i couldn't help but feel for the guy, so putting all thought of profit aside i did as any humane fisher person would do. i went to the truck, and got him a lead body suit. i gave it to him at cost! how's that! that's right. jigglestick knows where it's at! it was the least i could do. that is the kind of hospitality you will find on red lake. i also administered pain killers, and i believe by saturday night at bar close he was feeling none. let this be a lesson to all who dare to fish the red unprepared.
now you might hear a different version, but be warned. we have given bryce a new knic name now. in fact there are several to choose from maybe we will vote on it? so far we have scar face, digger, chipper, bob(hehehe)or aqua veiw. i like the last one. if you see him don't say any thing, be polite, as he is very sensitive.
BODY SUITS! GET YOUR TRIED AND TESTED BODY SUITS HERE!good fishing all.

It went a lot better for Bryce last night. Now that he knows to use a fishing rod rather then bobbing for crappies he caught some. Whoever told him that you got crappies just like bobbing for apples should be more careful. smile.gif

It was his dog DOC that showed him how to
bob for minnows, so he thought if his dog
could do it ?, well the rest is history.
Well you know how it is Kelly, Kind of like
the light in the bottom of the lake shocked.gif

Wow! What a weekend. It is going to take a while to recover from that one. Kelly and Scabs4me went home early and missed out on the Johnny Cash tribute we had at ninetoes house on Sunday morning. I was unable to make it to church but this was kind of a religous experience in it self. Did Ninetoe make it back out on Monday at 5:30 A.M. like he said he would? I had a blast! Now I am going to go to Mexico for a week and relax and try to get ready for my next adventure up there on presidents day. Jigglestick, Kelly-p, Ninetoe, Labs4me, Paul, Little Italy, Donna gal, Bryce.......Thanks for everything.

Scott, it's a good thing your house was 100 yrds away from ours...the Johnny Cash tribute spilled over from Ninetoes cabin to the Lab shack, (too cold to walk over and get you). Ninetoes should've just brought his rods out with him as I think he was just leaving at 5:30! grin.gif we'll see you and I hope Bryce too on Pres. day weekend...Recover,recover,recover....

Hey thanks for everything Kelly. We had an absolute blast this weekend! However,I doubt we'll ever be up during a full moon again. The forces on the triangle were way to strong! A couple of our guys are still trying to account for 4 missing hours after W.W. on Sun night. They're claiming a classic case of alien abduction. If it is true,at least they were nice enough to put em back out on the lake within a couple miles of the fishhouse when they were finished with em.
Bryce, It was great to meet you. Just wanted to thank you for the lesson in "Face Fishing" .I think I'm going to stick with the old hook and line for now, but you keep practicing!

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
