Does anyone know where the muskies are in Mann/Baby lake
during the spring/early summer? Started muskie fishing last year after
I hooked a 39" muskie in Baby lake while pike fishing. I have the fever now and need the usual treatment, catch more muskies.
Any help will ease my suffering.

hey Baby-Lake-guy: If you like to fish muskies Baby and Mann are a great choice. Baby is a much easier lake to fish. It has a lot more shallow to mid-depth and weed growth than Mann does. Generally, I'll see or hook about four times as many fish on Baby than I do on Mann. However, some of my biggest fish have come out of Mann Look for weed cover points and humps. During the day don't be afraid to work water as deep as 30ft. 3/4oz. jigs with a large reaper or creacher work well for me at the deeper depths. Also doen't be afraid to troll the open water 18-25 ft.down with deep diving cranks.

I see a lot of fish both on the north and south ends of Baby. In June, the weeds are the key, especially cabbage. Got a couple around the little island in the westcentral part of the lake last year too. When you go out of the bay from the boat ramp, there is a long (longer than you think at first) rock bar with weeds straight ahead of you. It's one of the lake's premiere spots. Fish the humps too. Good luck and CPR 'em.
------------------
Bernie Barringer's 10,000 Lakes Guide Service
http://fishingminnesota.com/bernie
Call toll free 800-890-FISH (3474)
[email protected]

Thanks alot Mouse & Fish-on. My brother has a place on Mann but mainly fishes Baby & Little Boy/Wabedo for muskie and has caught quite a few on those lakes (mostly Baby). He has only caught 2 muskie on Mann, but they were big(45" & I think 49"). But the muskie on Baby seem to be smaller (most under 40" a few up to 44")and Little Boy/Wabedo fish are nice but not that many. I don't think he knows these lakes that well.
I know someone who has friend that has some success on Mann trolling. I have tried but failed to connect with a muskie trolling on Mann. I must be doing something wrong, wrong locations I'll bet. Back to the drawing board.
Do you guys ever fish the Muskies Inc. tourney up there in September? I am thinking
of giving it a try this year. Do the pros fish the tourney, do we amateurs have a chance?

You observations on the size of the muskies in these lakes are right on. As far as the Muskies, Inc. tournament, everyone has a chance in muskie fishing. One or two fish win most muskie tournaments. Go for it.

Baby-Lake-Guy
If your interested in learning more about the trolling technique part of the open water pattern Cory Schmitt has an article coming in the InFisherman soon. A couple of the the keys are to find where the schools of cisoes are hanging out. They will not be in the same place everyday. Stay flexible. I have found Bucher depth Raiders to be very effective for this pattern. I Also catch Big Pike and Walleyes using the same pattern. Action is notusually fast but can be very exciting. Like rip the rod out of tour hand exciting when a 50" fish hits a fast moving crank bait. I'm usually on Mann over the 1st of August at Wildwood Beach Resort.

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
