The suckers should be running in a week or so,and I really need to put together a smoke house.
Has anybody built one out 2x4's and plywood for the wall and roof sheating. I dont think it wise to use OSB,not even sure about plywood. I think the glue in it may leach out onto the fish, or at least the fumes from it.
What do you guys think??

When I was a kid the old man down the street said the best way to make a smoker was to get an old fridge from the dump, pull all the insulation out and the compressor. You then have an air tight compartment with racks to lay the fish on, and the space that the compressor was in can used to put a hot plate in and an old skillet can be used to put your wood chips. He did make the best smoked fish that I ever tasted.

The odds of finding an old refer (one without any plastic) anymore are pretty tough. I have one that I have used that my granfather made 30yrs. ago. How big of one do you want. You can convert a brinkman by just turning the pan upside down and putting a hot plate on it then a cast iron skillet and a few chips and your all set. The smoker I use now is a brimkman barrel smorker it has an offset barrel were your suppose to put charcoal(it gets to hot)I put my hot plate in there and it works great. You can get one of these at kmart for about $135. Good luck and good smoken.

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
