Some friends and I are considering staying at a resort on Wabedo lake this fall. Has anyone fished this lake before? From the DNR survey it sound like fun. Any info would be great.

Have not fished it for about ten years. We fished it then for Muskies, but did ok on Walleyes and Crappies also. One winter we caught some monster sunnies (true one pounders) in about six feet of water in the month of March, but only that one year. The adjoining Little Boy Lake is good for Muskies too. Its only about ten miles from our cabin which is on Townline Lake, but we had a fire and all our Muskies equipment burned up and we haven't been back there since. Can't beat the fall up there, so enjoy!

Trashguy,
Do you catch any fish in townline? I heard it may have winterkilled last year?
Thanks

What do you plan to fish for? Wabedo is a designated muskie lake and if you fish for muskies on a regular basis, and know the fall cisco, pattern you can connect with a muskie or two fairly easily. Same for Little Boy. If you are not a muskie guy, smallies are abundant in both lakes.

We are hoping to get some waleyes, but smallies and muskies are fun also.

We'et not realy set on any one type of fish. The resort was a good deal so we took it. I can have plenty of fun fishing for Muskie an smallies. Are their any eyes in either of the two lakes?
I guess I already answered. does anyone else have trouble seeing new messages. most of the time i have to refresh my screen two or three times to see any messages that have been posted since the last time i looked at a thread.
[This message has been edited by Herkey (edited 04-02-2002).]

Haven't ever really fished for walleyes.
I have been fishing in that area since the mid seventies and also have a cousin with a
lake home on Little boy. Little Boy has better than average fishing for most game fish, and my cousin catches walleys on Little Boy, but I fish these lakes for muskies (all season) & smallies (in early to mid fall)and have caught one good sized walleye (in the fall) over a reef on a reef Hawg (muskie bait ). The Reef is in the middle of the lake and tops out at 7-8 feet. They catch walleyes (in the fall)on an inside turn with a very quick drop to deep water (50 to 60 feet) by a large flat in the 30 feet depth range. We catch smallies not too far from that turn.
As for Wabedo, That's strictly mukies for me.
The important thing to remember is that you'll have alot of water to fish between the two lakes, over 2,500 acres, so narrow your search before you hit the water. The resort so be able to help you out quite a bit.
Good luck.
Cuz like I said, he was breaking off a lot and they were like gold at the time. Guys an't giving up anything when combat fishing, I'm sure he pissed off some folks running around jumping in and out of open holes. 😉

Au, yes the black fly, aka the looper bug. I remember the first time I was introduced to it. There must have been 20-30 guys out in front of the French on the ice. This once guy was running from hole to hole and pulling fish, but he was also breaking off a lot. When I finally got close to him, he said he had 2lb line and just the bug on the end and jigging. I think I had about 6lb line and some jig with waxies. I jumped in my Suv and buzzed up to the bait store in Two harbors "which is closed now" to get new line and bugs. By the time I got back and fishing again the bite must have been over! Spent the rest of the day laying on the ice staring down the hole, ton's of fish went by but not bite!! ☹️ I used to get up at like 3:00am to drive up from Brooklyn Center, fish until dark and drive home. When I had more of the wander spirit. Heck I remember when I had no brains or money in the spring, getting up at like 2:30am, driving up and fishing every stream for about an hour that I could get to from Duluth to Grand Maris. Then driving all the way home the same day. 🤪

Last day of myself hunting before I help my friend with new clients. Back on the bigger marsh, mainly teal but 5 fulvous whistling ducks. A medium size duck but they fly and decoy like Canada geese, big circles and glide in. They are noisey birds

Kettle, sounds like an awesome trip. Never see drake bluewings in MN during the season. For the bridge my pucker factor would've been 11, and that's walking across both ways!!

I did the looper steelhead thing in front of the French River once. It was fun. I got one looper but the sight fishing aspect of it was the most fun. We saw a couple guys limit on steelhead up close to shore and learned the black fly was the way to catch ‘em. We didn’t have any. My first 40+ hour day that I can remember. Went to work Friday morning, Van Halen concert Friday night, too jacked up on the way home to call it a day so we loaded up for the North Shore. Fished all day, drove home Saturday night. Those crazy kids… Chequamegon Bay and the Apostle Islands have always been a want but an undone deed. The wander spirit has faded from my old traveling buds. They like to stick to what they know now.

About 20" of ice in Black Bay., although that's just based on how far my auger went before breaking through.
