Kelly, I was sitting there at the bar when you guys bolted out the door to see if you could assist in that last truck going down. When you left there were two guys on the ice and one guy missing. What happened? Did they find him? Just bums me out every time I hear someone makes a decision like that and takes others along for their death ride. Hope all came out Ok. Just curious.... Also, your hard effort has been appreciated by all who have crossed your path. You are gaining a very commendable reputation and I for one would like to thank you for all the hard work that's made it possible for me to experience some of the best fishing memories I've ever had to date. Hope to buy you a drink you at the WW when we get some soft water.

About a mile from where we thought the vehicle had gone through two guys in a portable flagged us down that had heard someone yelling and pointed us in the right direction. He was wet but O.K.. smile.gif
This group had their portable blow away in the wind way down at Benz's road and chased it across the lake for miles. The portable went across the ridge and they tried to drive right across behind it. They were about 2 miles west of the bridge.
The other two vehicles both drove into the pressure ridge in the DAYLIGHT. One was heading back to shore for more bait but drove 1 1/2 miles in the wrong direction. The other vehicle just thought it looked safe. frown.gif

Glad to hear it. I still don't understand the overreaction by the Sherriffs Dept. I know I'm preaching to the choir, but that ice is still good for another week yet at least. Did you guys pull the bridge yet? What happens if I go out there in my pickup anyway? Aside from not getting any support from the local Sherriff. Will they ticket? Do they have the right to do that? Seems to me I have a right to decide what is responsible for me and what is not.

Eyewitness,,, what they can do is ticket you for "reckless endangerment" but whether or not they do is pretty much a judgement call by them.

Kelly Is that the guy who went down with 4 others and only three came up at first? I had run up to westwinds and reported this I think it was this guy, but from what I understood there were two trucks in the party, didn't know they were chasing a portable. I had one of the guy tell me to run up and get someone out there. I hope that this is who you found. Too bad about the sheriifs.

Big brother strikes again!? I'm sick to death of authorities telling us what we can and can not do. GEEEZZZZZ I mean why not leave that decision up to the guys that are out there everyday moving bridges, plowing roads and generally keeping tabs on conditions.
I can't imagine the sheriffs dept. not responding to a call for help on the lake but I suppose now at least they can say 'I told ya so' after the fact

The one that went down that you are talking about was one vehicle with 4 people. One person got out right away and jumped to the far side of the pressure ridge. The other 3 came out on the south side of the ridge and were picked up right away. the "missing" person was walking down the north side of the ridge.
Today they were there when their vehicle was brought up. They were not chasing their portable, just looking for it.
I hear the Sheriffs Dept. could start writing tickets. I assume that also means that in years to come they will have time for officers to respond for anyone in trouble on the lake.

Glad to hear he got out, the guy I talked to told me they didn't know if he did or not. Still too bad about the cops.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
