URL Pike by Brian

Ok first of all to all of you that actually have the size of my fish figured out without being there, and seeing all of the pics, congrats. Most of you are WRONG!!! Yes thanks for the civilization, and sarcasm, and other ridiculous remarks made towards me and the Pike that I caught, all was appreciated, but did take the sources into consideration trust me. As a resort owner stated, "At one moment in life some people dont have friends, and then the internet was invented, and now that same man has many friends, and many opinions, but without it he is a lonely old sould without an bull to Give!!!!!" now, I would like to thank JIGGLESTICK, HUSKMINN, PWALDOW, BACKWATER EDDY, URL ROCKS, GULL GUIDE, SURFACE TENSION, AND SNIPE, for all of there descent input, and true civilization. Through all of this hype, I realized one thing, and that is that i have a tape measure at home cause I am a welder by trade..DUH!!!! I took a measurement from the top of my head to approximately the tip of the PIKE. That measurement was 9", then I took my Tape and measured from the floor to approximately where the Pikes fin ended and that was 13 inches with my boots on. I am 72" tall with my boots on whcich is 6 feet for all u math wizs'.....If add the 13 and the 9 u get 22, and subtract 22 from 72 u get 50". I am EXTREMELY SORRY for all and any inconveniences this has caused. I am an honest Sportsman, and take pride in what I do, In all reality somewhere while measuring with the gaf there was a mix up, and I take total blame. Also id like to say on behalf of myself, and my brother that If I didnt care what anyone thought I'd just leave this forum and go on with my 56" fish, but my curiosity finally struck after my bull headedness ended, with the help of that MUSKIE, I mean Holy Crap. But I will gladly take pride and be happy with My 50" Pike, and also, yes i am having a reproduction of that fish done, Only now I have to make some changes obviously. So now all of you that are measuring parts of ur body to come up with the size of my fish, YOU ARE ALL TOO SHORT IF YA KNOW WHAT I MEAN!!!!!!!!!LMAO......Please forgive me............Brian.
[email protected] also any Minnesotans that would like to get together and fish a bit my brother and I would love to meet a few of you!!!!!!!!......

Brian,

It's cool. I thought maybe you had measured from the wrong end of the gaf to the second mark. Either way I'm still waiting for my 50 incher. Congrats on a dandy pike. Know doubt I'd have a graphite done.

Good luck.

Then you'll begin to chuckle to yourself and all that other BULL will just melt away. THAT my friend is what fishing is all about!!!!Take Care SATCHMO

Brian, be thankful that you had witnesses and a camera when you caught your trophy. I had neither when I caught my 44 incher two years ago. It's much more enjoyable when you have someone to share it with. I can relate to how you feel. It is an amazing feeling to catch something so big.

Whatever the real size of the fish turned out to be, remember that 99% of the people that buy a license this year will not catch a fish of this size. That's impressive.

Brian,

Thanks for clearing everything up. Either way man, it's a fish of a lifetime, and on 2 lb test to boot. Congrats smile.gif BTW where are you from, maybe some day we can hook up for some fishin' and I can hear first hand the story. If we met at WestWind we can put it on Kelly's account, I heard it's endless grin.gif

I've sat on the sidelines and watched this topic take a life of it's own. I was wrong to lurk!!
I do not care if this fish was a 3 inch perch caught by a little child or a huge northern caught by an adult. It was a great time for that person. I would have loved to be there when it came out of the hole. Whether it was 56" or 6" a person enjoyed catching it. Just as we all would have.

Jeepers - some of you guys stay up late...

Brian, no matter what, when you get a big one like that, it gets the adreline going and the heart pumpin' - and it ain't something you are going to forget for a long time. And I would be willing to bet you will be back to see if you can get another one.

Congrats aGAIN FOR A NICE FISH - especially on two # test. Sorry if I or anybody else offended you.

Yeah Kelly, me too. Got to get my priorities straightened out again. Too much work and no play makes Jack Russ without humor! wink.gif

Brian, I took my buddy Tom to Lac Seul 3 years ago with my dad and agroup of his buds.
One of his buds took us to a hidden pike haunt. Tom caught a 42 in, 22 lbs, now hanging on the wall fish on my rod with my favorite lure. I rememeber it like yesterday, and as fondly as if the rod had been in my hand at the time. Don't care what anyone says, that was a great day! grin.gif

By the way, Tom's 5' 10" and a pic was taken of him in almost exactly the same pose as yours, and yours is WAY bigger!

Sorry if I offended you. I know the feeling you have in catching a once in a lifetime fish of that size, especially on 2# test line. The best of luck to you, and good fishing.

I was the editor of MUSKIE magazine for 3 1/2 years and one of my primary responsibilities was analyzing photos that come in for publication. Some people make mistakes, and some lie. I have analyzed several thousand photos of pike and muskie. My first guess was that this was a 43- to 45-inch pike.

However I have an ace up the sleeve. I know a guy who is a forensic scientist for the FBI who is nationally recognized for his work in analyzing photos. His work is accepted in courtrooms across the US. He once analyzed a photo for me in which the person claimed to have caught a 60-inch muskie. Using the size of a known object in the photo, they can get a remarkably accurate measurement of anything in the photo. They even know how long the sections of a person's finers are based on that person's hieght, and things like that. Remember this is science and is accepted in courtrooms across the US. His analysis of the 60-inch muskie was based on things he could find in the phjoto of known length (In the muskie photo one of the things he used was a pop can.) He determined that the muskie was within an inch of 60, which verified the angler's assertions.

Using known lengths of known objects in this pike photo, the length of the bill of Brian's cap (They are primarily the same size, and factoring in the angle on which it sits on his head) and the pocketknife on his belt, his calculations of this northern pike put it within 3/4-inch either side of 44 inches.

Sorry Brian, I did that as civil as I could, but you have made a mistake and I suggest you call your graphite reproduction person again.

It's a great pike, probably about 25 pounds, and it's too bad it has been ruined by all this.

Brian,

Hey, I think I know who that resort owner is....I bet I know where you were sitting when you heard him speak, too.

Anyway, I think everyone here knows you caught a great fish. At least you had someone there to share the experience with and the means to take a photo. Last summer I was fishing the Bighorn River in Wyoming on a cold, rainy day. I was by myself and although there was a tremendous hatch ocurring, I was struggling with a match. Finally, after an hour of nothing, I hooked into a wonderful fish. It was the biggest trout I'd ever caught on a flyrod and, at that, it was a Cutthroat, my favorite specie. When all was said and done, I held her next to the end of my fly rod, carefully marked the spot and gently returned the big hen to the water. It was as beautiful a fish as I have ever seen. As I stood and looked around in the rain, I realized that I would have to tell the story of this fish without the benefit of a photo or a concurring partner. The tape in my truck told me she was at least a 20" fish. I wish someone had been with me that day because I don't think I'll ever see a fish like that again.

Hope to see you on the water some day.

I'm just going to ignore Fish-On's post...this dog is now asleep and we should act accordingly.

Good luck.

I showed the picture to my wife and she said it was another extreme case of "MLE" (Male Length Exaggeration)

Nice fish Brian...I am envious, but still a little miffed by reading some of your postings. After a two hour battle, the last thing this "old-Timer" needed was to be prodded, measured, gaffed, dragged outside and had your hand stuck up her gills.

Just my opinion....

Brian_s,
When I was about 20 I shot what I thought was the buck of a lifetime, a very nice mature 10 point that I scouted and hunted for a couple of years. I thought I would be the envey of all my hunting buddies and it would inlist me in the "He is a good hunter club". Much to my surprise I recieved the same reaction as you did with your fish. It is nothing short of skill to battle a pike with 2lb test and not loose it. I commend you on keeping your cool!

There's gota be some unwritten rule about guys and there fish/deer. Remember if you do it twice its not luck but you'll get no better recognition from a guy unless he's been there before.

Brian, It is for exactly this type of situation that I'm so fortunate to have a 12 inch measuring stick with me at all times. However, some days its just too cold to use properly wink.gif

i can't believe how many perfect people there are all in one place! i am honored to be in the same room. brian the way i look at it, is fishing to me is more than catching fish so you can impress others. it is kind of like me, and the fish. thats all. the peacful evenings on the lake. no distractions. being in tune with that jig/minnow at the end of your line. catching the fish, checking it out, and slipping it back into the water, saying to yourself that was cool. no body else needs to know. you probably should of expected the kind of response that you recieved. you shared something with us you didn't have to. thanks

Brian:
According to the laws of physics you SHOULDN'T have been able to pull in that fish, but the laws of crafty fishing overrule the laws of physics.

here are a few of my favorites:   1) cube breast meat, marinate in Italian dressing over night, wrap in bacon, grill    2) cube breast meat, cover with shore lunch or any other breading batter of your choice, flour/egg wash etc if you like that, fry and enjoy just like little chicken nuggets   3) cube breast meat, season with salt, pepper, garlic, quickly fry in pan serve over rice, can also look up  South Dakota version of chislic similar to this   4) cream of something soup, crock pot with what ever you want lol   5) pheasant and dumpling soup   6) this one is a little bit of work but good stuff: https://fromfieldtoplate.com/2016/08/16/sesame-pheasant-garden-veggie-stir-fry/   I tend to save all my legs and prepare them together. For example this last weekend I shot 2 birds on Sat and 3 on Sunday for a total of 10 legs. Put them all in a crock pot, with beefbroth and a can or 2 of dr pepper to make sure they are call covered. cook on low until tender. pull all tendons etc out and shred any meat you can salvage. add  barbeque sauce and serve on a bun and toppings of your choice. will be very similar to pulled pork.   I hate wasting legs, and I hate even more seeing others not utilize them and just breast out birds and leave the legs to rot     My team of GSP's have been putting the hurt on birds this year here in SD. pleasantly surprised with numbers after the brutal winter we had. probably had my best year of sharptail hunting that I can ever recall in my lifetime also.

read Jeff Sundins most recent report........even he's pretty leary about the state of current ice conditions..........

You can prepare/cook them pretty much any way you make chicken.  The taste and texture is very similar.  I'm sure I could do what Moose posted above with his grouse and the finished product would be almost identical.   My favorite recipe is a slow cook in a cast iron pot.  That takes some time because it requires cooking at low temperature for at least 90 minutes.  The finished product is very good.   Being that its so warm out, I might try grilling some here too.   I also give a few away each season.  My possession limit is triple the daily bag limit so its something I have to be mindful of before I go hunting again.

Walked out about half a mile on Tuesday with max safety (life jacket, ice picks, long rope to house, and chisel).  Ice was very solid and I measured 7½" today (Thursday).  The first 1/8 mile was nice dark ice that was large chunks frozen together, but quite smooth.  Then there was about 40 feet of very jagged white ice.  Had to lift the portable over the points of ice otherwise it would hang up on them.  Then the next mile of ice was rough white ice as shown in the picture with the ice scoop.  At the small island before Birch Island the ice appears to be dark (and probably smoother).  Several snowmobiles and ATVs were running out as far as Birch Island but it was easy walking for me.   Fishing got better each day.  Rainbow and chubs were about equal.  Couldn't catch a fish on pike suckers.  Best fish was the 27" (8#-3oz) hog shown in the picture.  Had a hard time getting her head into the hole.  Picture quality is bad because I wanted to release her quickly to avoid further stress.  Good luck out there and be careful on the ice.

Measured 6" good clear ice today about 50 yards off the north side of Moccasin point. Walked out for a little ice fishing. Remember ice conditions vary around the lake, depending on sun exposure and current in channels/narrows. Be cautious, safe and verify your local ice conditions.  Directly off the Moccasin point boat landing, in the channel ice conditions looked poor. Picture is from Northside of Moccasin point I the early morning  when ice looks the best

Finished the 23 waterfowl season over Thanksgiving. Got to hunt two days of the long weekend. Saw a modest number of ducks, and harvested mallards, bluebills, and ringnecks as the water began freezing over during the weekend. One of our tougher seasons with different migration patterns probably due to unusual weather patterns with constant fluctuating between well above average temps for a period and then almost instantly well below temps before going well above again, and so forth. Still will cherish the memories with family and friends and relive the sights and sounds of out on the water during fall. Will be posting ice fishing reports in the fishing report clubs as soon as the ice is safe. Happy Holidays everyone.
