You can expect a lot of guys drinking a lot of beer.
Quite a spectacle, sometimes entertaining, could be a nice wintertime diversion for you. This event used to be a bit more civilized with fish houses all over the lake and people setting up "camps" based on where they were from etc. A big focus was on the fishing. It has turned into more of a party and most people set in Walker Bay near town. Normal years = 4 feet of ice by February 12th. This year is different, but you still should be able to set up a camper. Roads are usually plowed and most years the organizers go out and plow roads all over Walker Bay for people to set up.

I have wanted to enjoy the pout fest activities for many years now, and finally this year I am planning on going. What can a guy expect, Need an atv? Just fish where ever you want? Can I park a camper on the lake? Thanks!

We have been going to the pout fest for many years. It is one big party. Lots of people wondering around on the ice, and lots of cars and trucks driving around. Best to just park and walk around to all the various "camps". I think people do fish also!

eelpout is a great time, but you need to use some common sense. Snowmobiling isn't going to be a big issue this year, but they will nail you for speeding out there and will get you for DUI. Drinking is a big part of eelpout but doesn't always need to be. If you go, try to get to Benson's for some pizza. Best stuff i've ever had!!!!! And oh yeah, try the pout!
If fishing is what you want, most of the villages are near town, so get out to some of the humps away from walker, 30-50 feet deep and fish.

Definately use your head about drinking and driving. Rumor had it, there were over 100 DUI's last year. Not good. Be safe.

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.

That's cute. My mother in law had all those little sayings. Her favorite was "Life's a betch then you die" so cheery. 😏
