Crappies and Ice Conditions

What are the chances of getting on the ice and catching some crappies between Xmas and New Year? My brother is considering driving up from St. Louis, MO - is this a good or poor bet? Any bluegills in the area in case we can't get on RED?

Thanks!

ATV's are getting out now. There is 6 inches or more of ice out to the "flats". Colder weather will set us ice faster now. The worst ice is right close to shore in the shallow water.

I know that this may sound stupid, but is anyone taking sleds out yet? Is the ice to rough yet. I am thinking about coming up next week, but don't want to have to walk a mile or so.

Right now there is not enough snow on the lake to lubricate the track. Other then that sleds would work fine. The ice is pretty smooth on the lake. The warm spell smoothed things out considerably.

ColdOne--rough ice shouldnt matter--its the lack of snow to keep your slides cool and lubercated, that matters--if you run boggies it might be ok, and carbide ware rods to steer with-- if you have never been there its a huge lake and these guys go 4 miles out. its a little scary out there alone--when guys like Kelly,Chaunce,Ninetoes,BaitCo ask if you have a cell phone and #s to call if your lost or broke down its a long night out there; Kelly will keep you up to date

Thanks for the information. I have been up there only once. Hopefully this weekend will provide the snow that is needed. You talk about phone numbers, are there some numbers that I should have in case of an emergency up on the ice? Also is there parking available at the access points? I know last year we paid to get on the ice, but I don't remember if there was a place to park there or not. Another thing, you people that provide the information on this site are very much appreciated by us that try to make the long run up there. I know I hear you talking about meeting for beers. If there is a place that most of you go. I would like to go there and meet some of you for a Cold One. Thanks again

Yes Cold One there are places to park. Hudec's and West Wind are our two watering holes and also where you learn what and where has been working to get on fish.
Both Hudec's and West Wind have their phone numbers on their lake passes if you have trouble on the lake. NINETOE has ALL the numbers memorized. grin.gif

Kelly I only had to use those #s twice. The 1st night I ran out of propane and I called Hudec"s. Don was nice enough to run me out a tank. Then the 3rd day I called Tim at W.W. and he brought me his auger! Of course I was with bieganek and all he had was a case of beer so I let him sit in my house. The fishing was slow so I told him it would cost him a 12 pack for rent!

Pretty good NINETOE!!!!! 3 nights fishing and only 2 calls for help. It should be interesting when you start taking your truck out there. Add another 1 or 2 calls each trip out on the lake so that you can get pulled out and you will only be making 15 or 20 calls for help for every 10 trips on the lake. A real step up. hehehehe
Thanks for paying my bar tab too! :-) Or didn't you know you did that. As SATCHMO would put it, "YOU'RE MY NEW BEST FRIEND"
See ya next time.

The fact is guys that I don't remember any of you eating Friday night. Just Baitco trying to sell something to any one that would listen. grin.gif Like selling Tim some tackle and then trying to sell the same tackle again to Sand Burr.

chaunce , well you know mark. Any angle is a good angle. Yeah we caught a few nice wallys after you two went exploring. With all that open water Im glad you were driving as the Savage's eyes had kind of a green tint to them. smile.gif

Kelly , Sand Burr almost fell for the sale! I did however get some free tackle after he had already sold it to Tim! smile.gif Then the sticker he put on my truck was crooked so I figure the eyes on his crappie should be set crooked! smile.gif

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
