We were all right, you should have ignored reality and stayed one or two more days.
The ducks and geese came in so thick at dark that for the first time ever "little italy" was speechless and she's not even a hunter.
Last night we just sat on the dike for about an hour after shooting hours and watched until it was too dark to see. The best guess is that about 1500 ducks and 400 geese were all trying to get into the "river field" at the same time. It was so loud it was like the sound washed right over us. Then just to really make it interesting those swans (now about 200) that have been sitting in the center paddy took off and flew right through everything trying to land. Mid air collisions, big time! shocked.gif

There has been talk about bass for the past couple of years. I haven't seen any myself but I'm not around the lake that much when the water is soft. I do know that there are a lot of little crappies in the river and channels. Maybe that is what Chaunce is seeing. Has he ever caught or seen a crappie???? hehehehehe It will be interesting to see what is in Dad's minnow traps next spring.
Yes I think we had too much fun again last weekend. The strange thing is that almost every time I see you I get a headache. :-)

Hello SATCHMO,
Guy and Dean (Mutt and Jeff) forgot about reality and came back up this weekend to hunt some more. It was a good shoot and I did a very good job of being a comedy act. It seemed that almost every time my first two shots were warning shots and sometimes all 3 shots were. blush.gif Then with all the grace I could muster while crossing the ditch in the jon boat to go after a cripple I managed to drop my gun into 7 feet of water. Good gun tho cause when I fished it back up and drained the water and mud out it missed just as good as before it went under.

Kelly - I was finally able to pick up your message from 10/6 and it looks like Kris and I should have stayed another day! We were close to doing just that but the four letter word "work" got in the way again. We had a GREAT TIME regardless and what the heck, there's always next year.

How did the Deer Season go? Brian was up at the farm for a while but he never makes it much farther than the out house.

I have a number of people interested in doing the ice fishing extravaganza. Would you recommend we shoot for any particular weekend?

Thanks for dropping me a note and keep in touch.

Hello "MAX",
We had a great year for the duck hunting. Right after you left the big flocks came in and stayed around all fall.
Deer season was the pits. The worst I've ever seen. In my opinion until the DNR pays up on it's ditch taxes our deer herd is in big trouble. Every year we lose many more square miles of habitat. The deer are clustered on the high ground and easy picking for the wolves. The low ground is no longer just low but too flooded to support deer anymore, vast areas of dead timber and brush. Our deer herd is in the same position now that the walleyes were in back in the 90's.
For ice fishing I would aim for late Feb. or March. That's usually the best fishing.
The contest is the first weekend of March. I know all houses are already rented out for that weekend. Pick a weekend and let me know.
Take care.

Kelly - I'm really not surprised to learn I left a day too early. I've decided I'm going to start a guide service where I show up the day before the client does. I wander about aimlessly for a few hours and leave. Once I have left the area the client is then guaranteed a good fishing and hunting trip the following day. I've proven this many times over the years and nearly every lodge owner has confirmed this for me.

I'm sorry to hear about the deer situation. I was hoping that since I was laying off of them for a few years they would bounce back. Could it be there are more efficient predators than me?

In regard to the fishing I'll plan to rally the troops for a couple of weekends in February or March. I'll give you a call to let you know the plan. You can call me the day after I leave and let me know how good everyone else did.

Take care and Happy New Year!
