Topps,

I tangled with an approximate 6 footer on March 30th. I fought it on 10/4 fireline/ fireball jig (walleye rig) for about 2 hours 15 minutes. Saw it well a number of times and got some on video, but lost it at boatside when we tried to net it. That got me the sturgeon fever! Typically I go up to fish walleyes two or three times each spring, and wind up fishing the sturgeon if the eyes are slow. But, the biggest that we've gotten in the past have been high 40" fish. This coming weekend, myself and three friends are going up on a monster hunt! We're going to fish with some heavier duty gear.....musky stuff, to get the fight over and release them sooner. Will report when I get back.

Rusults from this past weekend; We fished about 6 hours out or frontier on Sat. and got zip, nada, nothing. Well, suckers I guess if you want to count them. Talked to one other boat, the only other boat we saw, and they had 4, biggest 45 in. Oh well... Sunday we tried out of Vidas and got 6 in about 5 hours, but no lunkers. All babys, 18-26 inches. Crawlers on bottom, mostly in the deeper holes. I hope to go back possibly next weekend, have to hit a big girl this year. Good luck.

I'll be up there 4/30 - 5/2; camping and fishing out of Birchdale. Myself and two other guys had an eleven fish day a couple weeks ago when we were up fishing for eyes, and the water was so bad. Three decent ones (45,48,&49).The coolers will be stocked, you're all welcome to stop by the camper.

Topps, the only thing we know how to do is drink beer and hope to get lucky! All my buddies and myself can not wait. Like i said feel free to stop by and drink a few and shoot the ****, we are all friendly beer drinkers! If you see a rod bent, don't worry, probably one of my buddies fighting the trolling motor he hooked!

Well Boys, my crew headed up to Birchdale this morning. I'm sitting at work watching the minutes tick by. Nice guys that they are, they just called me to tell me that they're backing the boat in, and it sounds like they are enjoying a liquid breakfast. At least it's warm in the office. Who am I kidding, I'm going nuts sitting here. I need some support guys. You know what the anticipation is like, talk to me, make the day go by quicker.

Did you ever trade the 30-30?  If not would you consider selling?

go look at the talmoon thread.....kettles got a good report.    earlier last week i guy from another address reported anything from no ice over by leech lake then closer to grand rapids from 2 to 2 1/5 to 5 inches !!!!!!

Caught some crappies on the north end of Osakis on Nov 15th. Pulled from 25-27 feet. All laid on their side in the live well. All kept but one.

On the south end...   Ice continues to form and make progress on Lake of the Woods.  With that being said, it is going to take some time before it is safe and fish houses are out.  Resort ice guides have been out checking ice thickness, flying drones over the ice and basically staying on top of current conditions.   Back bays are locked up and there is some spearing for pike that has been happening.  Ice conditions even in back bays vary, so for safety, please work through resorts and outfitters.   Most of Big Traverse Bay is ice covered.  There are still patches of open water, some cracks that have opened up, etc.  This is typical for this time of year and it will be a bit yet before most can give the green light.     Lake of the Woods is big and there are many areas of the lake resorts and outfitters go out on.  Each business will be monitoring ice conditions in their area and make informed decisions when it is allowed to access the ice through their ice access and what weight limits will be allowed. Resorts and outfitters have started marking trails on the ice in bays and close to shore.  When it is time to get out on the ice, we encourage working through resorts and outfitters and staying on marked trails for safety. On the Rainy River...   The Rainy River is ice covered.  Local resorts and ice guides are monitoring ice conditions in areas of the river they offer ice fishing.  As you have read in this report previously, work through a resort or outfitter for safety reasons.      Up at the NW Angle...  The Angle is ice covered (as a whole).  Outfitters and ice guides have been marking ice trails.  The ice roads and trails are not open yet, but much of the ice has frozen smooth and is coming along very nicely. There are always areas throughout the winter where there is current up at the Angle so it is important to stay on the marked trails, both when they open up and throughout the ice fishing season, which goes through March, Mother Nature dependent on course.

'we have more fun' I Share On FishingMN  152 Posted January 25, 2017 Hey Moose ... what size Pug Bug do you typically use?  Smaller or bigger on your locale lake?   also, do you use the xl maki minnow or the smaller regular one?  For Crappies, noticed that the xl seems to catch bigger fish but not as much quantity?  Curious about your thoughts?
