Rainy this weekend?

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of coming up this weekend to try for sturgeon. I was one of the few boats fishing out of birchdale last weekend; cold, lots of ice chunks, and no fish. So I thought a lttle c&r sturge fishing would ease the pain. Anyone know if water conditions have improved? Much? How much impact does water clarity have on sturgeon fishing?

The water clarity has improved at Birchdale working it's way down river. It has a 18" clarity there and Clementson area has about 6".

Sturgeon have been biting thru the murky water time. It will remain good fishing for sturgeon as long as the walleyes are in the river for the spawn. River temperature about 39 degrees. Spawning of walleye starts at about 45 degrees.

Good luck!

Keep us updated on your success, I will be heading up for a couple days at the end of the month with a couple friends. We can't wait to get on the water and fish for these beasts!

Sandee... with the new Regs on Sturg.. Is there a time frame that you can not fish for them?? I see they put in a C&R time and a fishing time but it is all confusing... Even checked with the local DNR up there at the landing.. they were not even sure on the situation... ????

Looks to me the regs are pretty clear on this. The harvest and C&R seasons dates are defined there, and it shows a closed season alltogether during their spawning timeframe....from May 17 thru June 30.

I agree, the wa I read the regs I can fish C&R this weekend. Thanks for the water update, Sandee. Last weekend was sure the pits. I knew it would be bad from reading here, but I couldn't believe how few guys were around. Like 2 boats each at Birchdale and Frontier. I'll post results from the sturg excursion.

According to the regs the season starts April 24 2004-May 7, you guys were looking at the 2005 season for C&R. Look on the DNR website. This was also very confusing to me too.

I'm not refering to 2005, Wiskers was wondering about season closure during 2004.....It's all right there in the 2004 regs book. I personally don't find it confusing at all??? If a guy is confused by the reg book you could email the dnr, they're pretty good about getting back to you in a quite timely fashion.

As far as I can tell the regs aren't that simple. I had to go look at the 2003 Regs and they point out the Sturgeon season is open from July 1- April 30 Therefore you would assume the April 30th is in 2004.

That is a bit of work.

Measured 6" good clear ice today about 50 yards off the north side of Moccasin point. Walked out for a little ice fishing. Remember ice conditions vary around the lake, depending on sun exposure and current in channels/narrows. Be cautious, safe and verify your local ice conditions.  Directly off the Moccasin point boat landing, in the channel ice conditions looked poor. Picture is from Northside of Moccasin point I the early morning  when ice looks the best

Finished the 23 waterfowl season over Thanksgiving. Got to hunt two days of the long weekend. Saw a modest number of ducks, and harvested mallards, bluebills, and ringnecks as the water began freezing over during the weekend. One of our tougher seasons with different migration patterns probably due to unusual weather patterns with constant fluctuating between well above average temps for a period and then almost instantly well below temps before going well above again, and so forth. Still will cherish the memories with family and friends and relive the sights and sounds of out on the water during fall. Will be posting ice fishing reports in the fishing report clubs as soon as the ice is safe. Happy Holidays everyone.

Thanks for sharing this exciting career opportunity with Orvis in the Minneapolis area. It's great to see companies looking for passionate individuals to join their team, especially in the world of fly fishing.

Shocking, I know.  And what may be more surprising is that one need not head westward to find them either.  There is a thriving, reproducing population of them right here in Central MN.

Cosmo and I took the afternoon off and went pheasant hunting in the fresh snow yesterday.  Tried some new spots that I have never hunted before.  Raised 28 total.  I got a double at the second spot.  Two roosters flushed simultaneously and I dropped both of them.  The first one one fell dead but the second one went down as a cripple.  After retrieving the dead one, I went over to where the second one went down and after some good dog work, Cosmo came out of a patch of grass with it.  Then the final spot produced another rooster for a December limit.  Hunting after a fresh snow is quite often my most productive and enjoyable hunt of the entire season.

Did you ever trade the 30-30?  If not would you consider selling?

Caught some crappies on the north end of Osakis on Nov 15th. Pulled from 25-27 feet. All laid on their side in the live well. All kept but one.
