Does the snow help with thawing or slow it down? Me and another guy were disgusing this last night in the fish house. He thought that it would insulate the ice to keep any sun or warm air away. I thought the run of from the snow melting would eat the ice from the bottom up.
Can't wait to get the boat up their and feel that first bump on the end of a real fishing rod.
Let's bet on open water fishing on the river. I'll say March 27.

The snow usually will "insulate" ice from the warming sun, although with the Rainy River, the moving water under the ice, the run-off (melting snow) and the weight of melting snow on top all combined helps open the river.

In past years we have heard a report of 12" of ice at Birchdale, trucks parked on the ice in front of the ramp, with open water just a mile up river. Within a day or sometimes 2 (weather dependent) there will be open water at Birchdale. My point is: this year, the reports I have is there was 6-8 inches of ice here at Clementson. We then had warm weather, which melted the snow on the ice and made it slushy. Then, extra water was released from International Falls followed by 6-8" of snow. More water released from IFalls late December ~ ~ ~ results? chitty ice.

You might be close on your date for open water, could be earlier if we have good weather late February / early March.
