They re-did the road at Birchadale...shouldn't be as much a probelm. There is not much parking at Frontier..I don't think that ramp is open yet.

thanks....is frontier gonna be open enough by friday for a couple 16 foot boats? Can you park on the road at frontier? And the big question....Is fishing better at Birchdale or Frontier? Or is it a walleye a piece?

Most of the time at Birchdale you can hitch a
ride, if we all work together we can make things go pretty good at the landing. Someone posted do's and don'ts check it out.
By the way if I drive by a guy walkin I'll offer a ride!!!!Good Fishin

The county widened the road at Birchdale and Vidas access. I did not see the "No Parking" signs on the road when we were checking conditions. So . . . I am assuming there is parking on both side of the road.

Frontier landing can accommodate about 40 vehicles. That landing is not for big boats because the ramp is in poor condition. However, this is left up to the angler. Take a look at the ramp when the shore ice is gone and make your decision. Most will launch from Birchdale or at Vidas when it finally opens there.

Frontier had 100' of shore ice yesterday. You get a few that start going over shore ice and this breaks it up.

Hope this helps.

Just got back from 3 days of fishing. Birchdale was not busy....we pretty much put in or took out right away, although I expect the weekend to be much busier. They have widened the road substantially. Parking should be much better, and like another guy said, just about anyone will give you a ride to or from your truck. As of today, Frontier is also open, although the ramp is not nearly as good as Birchdale. They were still putting in some big boats at Frontier. There was a very strong East/Northeast wind last night and all day today that is opening the river quickly in spite of some very cold temps. I think the main channel is open at least 3 miles west of Frontier with varying shore ice. Water temp this A.M. was only 31 degrees! Saw some guys with frozen-up motors. Only die-hards were out, and conditions were brutal, esp. on the hands!

Are the ramps pretty busy? Does it help to get there early? I've heard that parking is kinda a pain and you have to park 2 miles from the boat ramp. If that's the case should a guy bring a 4-wheeler? How is the parking at Frontier? Just need some info so I know what to expect this upcomming weekend.
Thanks,

Thanks for sharing this exciting career opportunity with Orvis in the Minneapolis area. It's great to see companies looking for passionate individuals to join their team, especially in the world of fly fishing.

Shocking, I know.  And what may be more surprising is that one need not head westward to find them either.  There is a thriving, reproducing population of them right here in Central MN.

Cosmo and I took the afternoon off and went pheasant hunting in the fresh snow yesterday.  Tried some new spots that I have never hunted before.  Raised 28 total.  I got a double at the second spot.  Two roosters flushed simultaneously and I dropped both of them.  The first one one fell dead but the second one went down as a cripple.  After retrieving the dead one, I went over to where the second one went down and after some good dog work, Cosmo came out of a patch of grass with it.  Then the final spot produced another rooster for a December limit.  Hunting after a fresh snow is quite often my most productive and enjoyable hunt of the entire season.

Did you ever trade the 30-30?  If not would you consider selling?

Caught some crappies on the north end of Osakis on Nov 15th. Pulled from 25-27 feet. All laid on their side in the live well. All kept but one.

On the south end...   Ice continues to form and make progress on Lake of the Woods.  With that being said, it is going to take some time before it is safe and fish houses are out.  Resort ice guides have been out checking ice thickness, flying drones over the ice and basically staying on top of current conditions.   Back bays are locked up and there is some spearing for pike that has been happening.  Ice conditions even in back bays vary, so for safety, please work through resorts and outfitters.   Most of Big Traverse Bay is ice covered.  There are still patches of open water, some cracks that have opened up, etc.  This is typical for this time of year and it will be a bit yet before most can give the green light.     Lake of the Woods is big and there are many areas of the lake resorts and outfitters go out on.  Each business will be monitoring ice conditions in their area and make informed decisions when it is allowed to access the ice through their ice access and what weight limits will be allowed. Resorts and outfitters have started marking trails on the ice in bays and close to shore.  When it is time to get out on the ice, we encourage working through resorts and outfitters and staying on marked trails for safety. On the Rainy River...   The Rainy River is ice covered.  Local resorts and ice guides are monitoring ice conditions in areas of the river they offer ice fishing.  As you have read in this report previously, work through a resort or outfitter for safety reasons.      Up at the NW Angle...  The Angle is ice covered (as a whole).  Outfitters and ice guides have been marking ice trails.  The ice roads and trails are not open yet, but much of the ice has frozen smooth and is coming along very nicely. There are always areas throughout the winter where there is current up at the Angle so it is important to stay on the marked trails, both when they open up and throughout the ice fishing season, which goes through March, Mother Nature dependent on course.

Are you still planning on walking out there tomorrow? Has the ice actually thickened yet?
