I would suggest the Pelland area if Birchdale is not an option.Much more available water and the fishing can be just as good.

I would also suggest the Pelland area. The last two years we have fished that area and done well. Yes you can expect 50 to 100 fish days! The key for us was to get away from the crowds. The water levels last year were quite low. Most of our fish came out of 6 to 10 feet of water. Lets hear some more reports from this area. We'll be up there on the 3rd.

Thanks for the info. Has anyone fished that area this year yet?

Wegs, I know some guys who prefer to fish the Franz Jevnue area, the fishing can be very good in that area from what I've heard from them. I think chances are good that that stretch will be fishable by the weekend. I would avoid Pelland, it's a totally different fishery up there, your chances of catching a true hog are much less. I think we are going to wait another week to come up.

There is a ramp at Franze Jevne although it is not maintained by the county in the spring season. It is a steep slope to the river and it is a "man-handling" size of boat/motor. We are checking the river later this afternoon and will stop by Franze Jevne and take a picture to post on our web site.

I must say that the use of waders is most under rated. There are spots at the Manitou and above the rapids at Birchdale that hold some nice fish that are easier to get to if you have some chest waders and a good supply of jigs. If you enjoy catching fish and like to get away from the people, this can be a great way to do it. I suggest a long pole ..7 or 7.5 feet and lots of jigs. Keep the line lower too. 6lb might be as heavy as you want to go. You will get hung up and need to break away.
By the way just got off the phone with the folks on the River ......open at Mantiou ...not sure about Birchdale.

I couldn't tell you what the access is like for sure having never been there, but I think it is sort of a carry-in only type of a ramp. So large boats are not really an option there.
