Recommended Posts

Looks like the Sault Rapids will open late this year. Does anyone want the historical dates for the last 10 years when it was fishable? I fished it 1/26/02 then on 3/29/02 both times in a boat! contact me or leave your e-mail

S. R. Randy I'll take a look at those dates. Where are the Sault Rapids? Must be close to I-Falls.

Post your e-mail and I'd be happy to let you know. Sault Rapids is by Birchdale one of the two rapids on the river. Take Care, Randy

  • 2 weeks later...

Jitterbug - I have past opening dates for Birchdale listed on our web site. This is for over shore ice conditions. I have archives from 1999 through 2002 that you can read reports. Each year I learned to give more information, such as weather, etc.
Hope this helps. Upper Sault Rapids * are about 1/4 to 1/2 mile EAST of the Birchdale ramp.
*Edited* correct to upper from long -

1996 - April 9th
1997 - March 27th
1998 - February 29th
1999 - March 16th
2000 - March 3rd
2001 - March 19 / March 29
2002 - April 1

Didn't you get my e-mail?, Sandee's dates are close but as you see they can vary by weeks. The accesses are two miles apart but thier positions on the rapids and the current associated with them make alot of difference The river should start opening up this way faster with the warmer weather starting. There was alot of frost on the trees a couple miles east of Pelland a couple mornings ago, which would imply there was open water thier. If it stays real nice maybe a couple weeks.
I'll try to e-mail you 1 more time.
Take Care, Randy

Randy, I did not get your first email but I did get the second one. Thank you very much. It's interesting to see these dates.

Sandee thank you also.

Is there good places to fish there? I've never fished that far east. Birchdale has been the farthest east for me. What landing could I use ( 14ft. boat). Thanks, J

There's a county access (upper Sault) on County Road 85 2 miles East of Birchdale. It's steeper than the other accesses (Frontier and Vidas) in NW Koochiching County. The access rarely gets any where near as busy as the other ones. 10 vehicles vs 100 for the other accesses. It's a different stretch of river to fish, less developed untill you get to the OSB mill about 3-4 miles East. This stretch is relatively safe for about 3 miles to the east (up to the island). The rapids to the west you should know (the best time to learn is when the water is low) before venturing onto them (15HP motor if 3 in your boat). They are easy if you've done it as many years as I have. There are good places to fish above and below the rapids on the river.
River is open 14 mile east of Sault Rapids now!
