august smallies

Recommended Posts

i am so ready for summer. my buddies and I have planned a trip to rainy in late sept/early august. I also got a GPS for christmas, so i want to try it out. My question is do most of the bigger smallies go to main lake humps like they do in lake Erie? OUr group will take off out of International Falls, where are some cheap places to stay? I've also heard the islands cna be good along with mainlake points. i want to catch some big ones.

TUBE - you might want to post this on Rainy Lake.

Rainy River has some great smallmouth fishing. Late spring and fall - check out our web site for some nice smallies from last fall.

That is a great website! Do most of the smallies relate to shore or are they orientated like walleyes that sit in holes. i can't wait to come up and catch a bunch of them. I have a little river i fish where i live and the smallmouth relate to fallen trees in the river, is it the sameup there, or is the banks clean? Thanks tube

Tube,
I've heard wonderful things about the smallmouth (and Sturgeon) fishing below the dam in Int'l. Falls. Theres a boat access off Shorewood drive, in town. I've never fished there but I know there is rock structure in the vicinity. I'm sure its not the most scenic place to fish but if you go through a 1/4 # of leeches fairly fast (as I've heard of)it must have some good attributes.
