Sturgeon Regulation Proposal *sigh* AGAIN

Recommended Posts

The DNR has announced another change proposal for sturgeon recently on their web site at MN DNR STURGEON

After reading the proposal, please visit Statistics Reviewed

We have found if you manipulate the numbers, you can come up with a harvest number that would show a over harvest of sturgeon. We also find that if you use the formula properly, we are below the annual harvest.

Thanks for reading. More information to follow.

I love fishing sturgeon, especially in the spring, it fills that void here in the north, we can get some open water fishing in early with out the wild spring crowds. Sturgeon are excellent smoked, I never keep one and I very rarely see anybody else keep them. So no matter what they do, just keep the season open please.

I talked with the Baudette office of the DNR yesterday and was presented with only 2 main options plus some ancillary issues like transporting fish and lowering the slot size. The 2 primary options seemed to be a no kill fishery and a lottery for 300 kill tags similar the Moose drawing. This option would supposedly allow unlimited catch and release during the open season. It seemed to me that From the way it was presented that the DNR likes the lottery/ cath and release option. I don't know if that's a done deal or not but I suggested a compromise of the lottery/ catch and relese option while at the same time extending the season until the mid May walleye opener. It seems to me that would be useful in that it should help the resorts along the river during a time when not much is going on. It will also spread the most productive fishing over 3-4 weekends rather than 1 or 2.My thinking is that if we are going to be stuck with the lottery system let's try to get something in return that will benefit the local ecojnomy and sport fishermen.By the way the articles in Outdoor News and the Mpls. paper that I saw talked about providing input at public mettings up there on the border. I learned yesterday that the DNR will take in put as well by phone to Mike Larson 218 634-2522.or E Mail [email protected]
