How is fishing on the river?

Recommended Posts

Northerns - smallmouth - sturgeon and even walleyes are being caught. Talked to a local today and they heard good reports about walleyes. River is clearing nice and levels along with current improve daily.

Even heard that shiners were spotted!! Way Cool!!

Is there a varity of bait available in the Baudette area now, or should we bring anything with us? minnows, crawlers, or leeches?

Sandee and Rick,
I'll be up in a coupla' weeks to fish, and hunt bear. I've heard stories that the summer flooding you experienced really changed the river a lot! New holes, flats, a lot more debris, different river bank conditions, etc.. Is this true? What is the extent of the change, and do you think it's gonna effect fall fishing much?
See ya soon.

We had flooding last year with water almost as high and the fall fishing was good. I am sure there are new holes, flats where there was structure, etc. There is no debris left in the river, unless it has settled to the bottom. There is some erosion to the shoreline due to the high water and current. We are planning on getting out soon, if the winds would settle down some. I know our bay has experienced some changes in levels and structure. For the better actually, the sandbar east of the dock has decreased.

Keep an eye here and on our web site for fishing information.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just got home from Baudette. We caught 1-10lb, 1-8lb, 2-5/6 lb walleyes when we went out on a launch. I also caught 1-35" and 1-37" northerns. I REALLY enjoyed our fishing trip to MN. I fully intend to come back!

So far the river bite is still real slow. We picked up a couple of real small walleyes and a few tiny saugers. That stretch of warm weather slowed things down for a bit. We talked to several that fish it regularly and they agreed that the bite should start anytime now.

I spent thur, fri, sat fishing the river from the gap area all the way up to the upper sault rapids, quite slow. Looked around for new structure and fished spots I've fished for years in preperation for the Northstar tourney. We got decent numbers of smallish fish on the lower end, but it seemed the further upstream we went the fewer and smaller the fish got. Bass were biting good around Birchdale, also got a couple small Sturgeon. We did manage a 20 inch Walleye near the silo down from Birchdale, biggest fish of the 3 days. Highlite was a 17 inch crappie out of that nice eddie right below the upper sault rapids. Gonna be a while before they start snappin, Hopefully by the time the tourney rolls around they'll be going good, but I doubt it, mid to late October sounds more realistic.

Regards....Fisky
