Sturgeon on the Rainy

Recommended Posts

What's the deal now, sturgeon fishing is still open on the Rainy, obviously you are going to catch some Walleyes while fishing sturgeon. If you immediately release them are the CO's going to hassle you? How do they know if you are targeting sturgeon or walleyes? What's to say I couldn't sit there all day and catch walleyes and throw them back, which is what I do when season is open, I have yet to keep a spring run walleye, I'm just there for the fun of catching them. Maybe someone could tell me how this situation should be handled?

Your okay as long as it's an incidental catch and you are not targeting wally's, and of course you release it! I don't catch many wally's in the spot's I fish sturgeon, I do get one now and then but not everytime, my favorite stugeon hole is sometimes loaded with BIG Burbot's in the spring though, can sure go thru the crawlers when they're in there thick!

Just don't be fishing sturgeon with a medium action spinning outfit spooled with 8lb. test with a jig and minnow, they may frown on that one.
If you have matched your equipment with the species you're geared for, there wouldn't be any trouble, but if you are obviously fishing with light gear, they may shake a finger at you.
