We are hoping for an "early" ice-out on the river, although it all depends on how warm we get this month of February. There is approximately 16 to 18" of ice on the river, which is less than a "normal" year.

If you can plan a trip on short notice, keep an eye on the reports here and on our web site for updates. We will be updating daily as conditions progress.

rainyg - 60 miles - Wow that would bring open water past Clementson.

What I believe rainyg is saying is that he is predicting open water from International Falls to the Big Fork and Little Fork areas?? The area where you would be launching from Pelland or International Falls. This, of course, is a different fishery than the area of the Rainy River from Manitou Rapids running to Lake of the Woods. There is excellent fishing in this area that rainyg refers to.

Like we have said, we are looking forward to an early season on the Rainy River here in our local fishery, meaning launching first at Birchdale then Frontier and Vidas. Possibly the first weekend of March could see some hardy souls putting boats in at Birchdale over shore ice. Earliest date in the last 8 years for launching at Birchdale was the last weekend in February.

We will be checking conditions and reporting as soon as we see open water. Just keep and "eye" here.

Sandee...I noticed you had a record high of 44 last monday up in your neck of the woods, it looks to be well above freezing today as well. Is this weather starting to have any effect on the river, or do we need even higher temps for anything to happen? I suppose more runoff helps erode the ice quicker as well, although we probably won't have much of that this year, which is a good thing. I guess I'm just getting too excited but march is only 2 weeks away. We want to be on there as soon as it is possible, we are bringing up small boats so shore ice isn't a problem. I guess it's kind of hard to predict ice out... it's kind of like predicting the weather, but do you have an updated educated guess? Is the 1st or 2nd weekend in March out of the question?

Rick & I are going to check the river today. We will start around the Indus area and see what the conditions are. We will post pictures on our website. Seems that once the river is open shore to shore at Indus it is only about one week away from being open at Birchdale. Sunny days help, although if temps are warm on cloudy days, it is still melting. Overnight lows in the teen's also promote melting. Run off doesn't seem to be a factor other than causing more problems with the clarity of the river.

With less ice on the river we don't think it will take long to be open water fishing. Optimistically, the first weekend in March is a target date.

I have heard some resorts on LOW are not taking reservations past the middle of March due to the prediction of possible poor ice. If you have plans to fish LOW late March be sure to contact the resort you are staying at. Portables may be the option with some great fishing.

Keep an "eye" on the reports.

Sandee:
You're the best. Great job, just as we've come to expect year in and year out from you.
Your early spring work to scout the river makes spring come all the faster, whether the river opens or not.
Thanks

Sandee--I am wondering about how far the Rainy is open. When you say mile marker 170
do you mean it's open from International Falls to mile marker 170? Thank you for all your up to the minute information.

We check the river UP to mile marker 174 which is close to Loman. I assume if the river is open to 174 it would be open from International Falls to that point. There are areas you can fish at Pelland and International Falls. Don't know what the conditions are of the ramps or what the ice-out conditions are. You could contact the International Falls Chamber of Commerce for this information at 800-325-5766.

We checked the river on Monday th 18th and it has opened 4 miles since last Friday. We will recheck again on Thursday the 21st.

River is open now 9 miles East of Birchdale at mile marker #165. There is a good open area from middle of the river to the canadian side. I have posted a picture on our web site.

The below zero temperatures will have an impact on the melt, although it won't slow it too much. Possibly delay the opening at Birchdale by a day or 2??

We will check again this weekend and let you all know where it is open.

I'll bet that it opened a few more miles since monday...any updates yet Sandee? Are we going to loose some ground if we get the sub zero temps that are predicted for next week?

What is the river doin' this week Sandy? If it does open up enough for me to drop in a boat over the shore ice next weekend, will there be walleyes moving in this early? How about the big pike? I've caught a lot of em' up by the mouth of the big fork river this time of year, but it's been such a weird winter I can't even imagine what the fish are up to. Is there ice still in the big fork out to the rainy, how thick?
Thanks for all the leg work to both you and Rick. You folks are terrific!

The river has slowed in opening due to the cold overnight temperatures. It is still just barely past Franz Jevnue. Only a mile to go and it gets cold!!

The river is open all the way but I don't know what the conditions are at the Pelland ramp where you would launch a boat to fish near with of the Fork rivers. Call 800-325-5766 for ramp information.

Thanks for reading our reports too! We appreciate it. smile.gif

Cold - cold - cold - overnight lows 15 to 20 below I am sure is making ice on the river where it was previously open. We will check to verify but I don't think we would surprise anyone with this information.

Back to square one I do believe. *sighing*

Just teasing us opening within one mile of Birchdale then slamming the door shut. LOL

We will update soon.

Really hate to see a grown woman cry!

here are a few of my favorites:   1) cube breast meat, marinate in Italian dressing over night, wrap in bacon, grill    2) cube breast meat, cover with shore lunch or any other breading batter of your choice, flour/egg wash etc if you like that, fry and enjoy just like little chicken nuggets   3) cube breast meat, season with salt, pepper, garlic, quickly fry in pan serve over rice, can also look up  South Dakota version of chislic similar to this   4) cream of something soup, crock pot with what ever you want lol   5) pheasant and dumpling soup   6) this one is a little bit of work but good stuff: https://fromfieldtoplate.com/2016/08/16/sesame-pheasant-garden-veggie-stir-fry/   I tend to save all my legs and prepare them together. For example this last weekend I shot 2 birds on Sat and 3 on Sunday for a total of 10 legs. Put them all in a crock pot, with beefbroth and a can or 2 of dr pepper to make sure they are call covered. cook on low until tender. pull all tendons etc out and shred any meat you can salvage. add  barbeque sauce and serve on a bun and toppings of your choice. will be very similar to pulled pork.   I hate wasting legs, and I hate even more seeing others not utilize them and just breast out birds and leave the legs to rot     My team of GSP's have been putting the hurt on birds this year here in SD. pleasantly surprised with numbers after the brutal winter we had. probably had my best year of sharptail hunting that I can ever recall in my lifetime also.

read Jeff Sundins most recent report........even he's pretty leary about the state of current ice conditions..........

You can prepare/cook them pretty much any way you make chicken.  The taste and texture is very similar.  I'm sure I could do what Moose posted above with his grouse and the finished product would be almost identical.   My favorite recipe is a slow cook in a cast iron pot.  That takes some time because it requires cooking at low temperature for at least 90 minutes.  The finished product is very good.   Being that its so warm out, I might try grilling some here too.   I also give a few away each season.  My possession limit is triple the daily bag limit so its something I have to be mindful of before I go hunting again.

Walked out about half a mile on Tuesday with max safety (life jacket, ice picks, long rope to house, and chisel).  Ice was very solid and I measured 7½" today (Thursday).  The first 1/8 mile was nice dark ice that was large chunks frozen together, but quite smooth.  Then there was about 40 feet of very jagged white ice.  Had to lift the portable over the points of ice otherwise it would hang up on them.  Then the next mile of ice was rough white ice as shown in the picture with the ice scoop.  At the small island before Birch Island the ice appears to be dark (and probably smoother).  Several snowmobiles and ATVs were running out as far as Birch Island but it was easy walking for me.   Fishing got better each day.  Rainbow and chubs were about equal.  Couldn't catch a fish on pike suckers.  Best fish was the 27" (8#-3oz) hog shown in the picture.  Had a hard time getting her head into the hole.  Picture quality is bad because I wanted to release her quickly to avoid further stress.  Good luck out there and be careful on the ice.

Measured 6" good clear ice today about 50 yards off the north side of Moccasin point. Walked out for a little ice fishing. Remember ice conditions vary around the lake, depending on sun exposure and current in channels/narrows. Be cautious, safe and verify your local ice conditions.  Directly off the Moccasin point boat landing, in the channel ice conditions looked poor. Picture is from Northside of Moccasin point I the early morning  when ice looks the best

Finished the 23 waterfowl season over Thanksgiving. Got to hunt two days of the long weekend. Saw a modest number of ducks, and harvested mallards, bluebills, and ringnecks as the water began freezing over during the weekend. One of our tougher seasons with different migration patterns probably due to unusual weather patterns with constant fluctuating between well above average temps for a period and then almost instantly well below temps before going well above again, and so forth. Still will cherish the memories with family and friends and relive the sights and sounds of out on the water during fall. Will be posting ice fishing reports in the fishing report clubs as soon as the ice is safe. Happy Holidays everyone.
