Recommended Posts

Water temp on Sunday was at 63 degress.
Little walleye movement so far, but more shinners are now coming in.

The shinner migration usually starts in Early to mid Sept. Alot depends depends on the shinners themselves. Whether it's water temp that drives them in or something else, but Oct. fishing as you know can be very, very good. Last year there wasn't much of a shinner run or at least not like other years.
An early run should bring in more fish and sooner than "normal". However, when it comes to walleyes it's anybodys guess, that's what makes it fun.

How long does the shiner run last? I've fished the Rainy in Oct for about 5 years. A couple of years we have hit the run and done very well other years it has been very slow. I'm know things are different every year but is this early and how will this affect the fishing going into October?

We have had shiners as early as mid August here in the Clementson Bay. We found in 1999 that with very few shiners in the river, fishing was excellent. That year I caught more walleyes in the 27-30 inch range than previous years, or since. We were lucky enough to have a few of the elusive shiners that year.
The walleyes are "programmed" to run up the river in search of the shiners, whether the shiners run heavy or not. We had a large amount of shiners harvested from our area, by a few groups, about 3 years ago, and we tend to think this may have made a difference in the number and size of the shiners the following years.

Water temperature and shorter days is another trigger for walleyes to start the move. We are reporting a temperature reading of 65.7. I know each can have a different reading, so we determine change by just using our readings.

Walleyes have been slow this past week, although saugers are abundant, as are sturgeon. We need to have a temperature of 58 to 60 degrees for better walleye action, at least in our area.

Reports from Birchdale about 10 days ago was good, haven't heard anything lately.

Water Temp on Sunday morning was 60 degress.
Monday morning I had a reading of 58, but it warmed up to 59 before the day was done. The cooler nights and shorter days are helping to bring it down. Looks like a nice week of weather coming up, may not drop too much.

Caught some crappies on the north end of Osakis on Nov 15th. Pulled from 25-27 feet. All laid on their side in the live well. All kept but one.

On the south end...   Ice continues to form and make progress on Lake of the Woods.  With that being said, it is going to take some time before it is safe and fish houses are out.  Resort ice guides have been out checking ice thickness, flying drones over the ice and basically staying on top of current conditions.   Back bays are locked up and there is some spearing for pike that has been happening.  Ice conditions even in back bays vary, so for safety, please work through resorts and outfitters.   Most of Big Traverse Bay is ice covered.  There are still patches of open water, some cracks that have opened up, etc.  This is typical for this time of year and it will be a bit yet before most can give the green light.     Lake of the Woods is big and there are many areas of the lake resorts and outfitters go out on.  Each business will be monitoring ice conditions in their area and make informed decisions when it is allowed to access the ice through their ice access and what weight limits will be allowed. Resorts and outfitters have started marking trails on the ice in bays and close to shore.  When it is time to get out on the ice, we encourage working through resorts and outfitters and staying on marked trails for safety. On the Rainy River...   The Rainy River is ice covered.  Local resorts and ice guides are monitoring ice conditions in areas of the river they offer ice fishing.  As you have read in this report previously, work through a resort or outfitter for safety reasons.      Up at the NW Angle...  The Angle is ice covered (as a whole).  Outfitters and ice guides have been marking ice trails.  The ice roads and trails are not open yet, but much of the ice has frozen smooth and is coming along very nicely. There are always areas throughout the winter where there is current up at the Angle so it is important to stay on the marked trails, both when they open up and throughout the ice fishing season, which goes through March, Mother Nature dependent on course.

'we have more fun' I Share On FishingMN  152 Posted January 25, 2017 Hey Moose ... what size Pug Bug do you typically use?  Smaller or bigger on your locale lake?   also, do you use the xl maki minnow or the smaller regular one?  For Crappies, noticed that the xl seems to catch bigger fish but not as much quantity?  Curious about your thoughts?

I caught a few eyes... we're getting a dusting of snow tonight. I probably won't fish much until we get more ice and snow as I like running the sled. Really don't like ice fishing much, do it more for something to do as there's not much to do in the winter. I'm going to start bobcat trapping this winter though
