We are making our first trip up to the Rainy river. We are planning on going 3/30 - 4/1 . Any information regarding places to stay or ideal areas to fish would be great. Does anyone fish in the International Falls area or do most people stay towards Baudette? Is the river far east of Baudette even open yet? Any information you might have would be great. We are interested in walleyes and sturgeon. Thanks -Rick Anderson

Hi, the Rainy River is open to Wabanica Bay which is between Baudette and Lake of the Woods. Most people fish from near the Clementson area all the way up to Birchdale. There is 20 miles of fishing on the river. There are many areas that offer great fishing, you have 3 ramps to use. The Vidas ramp (1 mile East of Clementson Resort) Frontier ramp (10 miles East of Clementson) and Birchdale (18 miles East of Clementson). You have 8-10 miles to fish between the different ramps. Lots of people like the Frontier area, that is why the ramp had over 100 cars there last Saturday. There is parking for only 40 vehicles in the lot. It's hard to call which area will produce the best, some depends on the wind, if you drift. Going just around a corner can put you in calmer waters if you anchor. The river has been open for 3 weeks, it starts at Birchdale and opens to Lake of the Woods. Fishing has improved, 3 anglers caught at least 75 fish today. Seeing "lake" walleyes, so the waves of walleyes are coming. Fishing should be good to season close on the 14th of April. We will report here everyday the fishing and give some kind of pattern for the fish, as to which areas seem to be producing more. Anglers do fish the East side of Birchdale. There is a ramp at Pelland, located on Hwy 11 and Hwy 71, 10 miles out of International Falls. This is an area we don't report on, it is more associated with the office of tourism in International Falls.
Lodging can be difficult this time of year, I know we are full those days. Call Office of Tourism in Baudette at 800-382-3474 for lodging referrals, if you plan to fish our side of the river.
