Well the last time I fished Rice was Labor Day. Got a couple walleyes on cranks in 5-10 fow. Fished with Redtails and Rainbows in 10 - 30 fow and all I caught were pike and smallies. Both pike and smallies ran very nice in size.

The reports I'm getting now for Rice is they getting a few eyes in 15 fow on crawlers or minnows in the early morning or evening.

big eyes,
Did you hit Rice on Wed? Have a place on there and I'm curious.....or was it too windy/wet?

My recent success has been far more pike and bass action, both deep and shallow, lot of fun. Topwater presentation to mid range cranks. Few accidental wallys on bass stuff, but not a lot of recent success specifically targeting wallys.

Looking to put together a game plan for fall fishing, thanks.

borch,

If you don't mind, let me know if/when you'll be on Rice this fall. I'd like to say "hi" on a drift past and exchange greetings and reports. Probably already have this summer.....

Been a different year out there, far more bass (greens and browns) and pike than in recent years and less wallys. Lot of fun though.... I'm on the shore with the newer access, about a 1/2 mile to the north from it. Often on Mille Lacs, I see you've been there as well.

Good luck where ever you're at!

I had an excellent year on Rice for eyes. But it was a unusual pattern this summer. Shallow, middle of the day on cranks. Didn't catch an eye on Rice on live bait since the middle of June.

I'll hopefully make it back out there a few times this fall. I'll be in an old Blue lund Predator with a merc on the back. Not probably for at least a couple weeks though as I'm scheduled pretty tight right now. Although I'm planning a night of fishing on Mille Lacs next Thurday night. Likely the SW side pulling cranks. Then it's up to Cass Lake the week after. Man I love fishing this time of year! I'll get some duck hunting in too.

Hope to see you on the water!

  • 2 weeks later...

Anyone on Rice recently? I've not been for a few weeks. Curious if the summer pattern of trolling the cranks is still holding true. Thinking one of these days the cool nights might trigger back to a more typical fall vertical jig/minnow bite. But who knows, been unpredictable all year.

I'll be there in a Black Lund 1700 with a 115 Yammy. Say "hey" if y'all are out there.

I was on Rice this past weekend, Sat & Sun with two young boys, so no serious fishing. The water was VERY green on Sat, and not just on the surface.Would'nt even let the kids go in the water. It did clear up on Sunday, or at least it blew out of our basin (west end).
No fish were caught. All I wanted was a few panfish for action, but even crappie minnowing the diving docks produced nothing, nor did pulling rapalas in six feet following the weed edges. There were boats parked on the midlake hump, but then aren't there always?
Cjac, you going this weekend? Give me a ring.Flynner is asking about ducks at thief.

I went to the cabin on Sat evening / Sun. Didn't make it out on the lake but fished from the dock. We did pretty well in reference to crappies/ sunfish. The larger sunnies were biting on minnows. As for 'eyes I have never run cranks. I always run helicopter lindy rigs. I make my own since I make different lengths. Run fatheads but a little heads up if you're not familiar w/ the lake in the fall the shiners come up into the shallows as do the large 'eyes. The 'eyes are up there in the night.

Thanks for sharing this exciting career opportunity with Orvis in the Minneapolis area. It's great to see companies looking for passionate individuals to join their team, especially in the world of fly fishing.

Shocking, I know.  And what may be more surprising is that one need not head westward to find them either.  There is a thriving, reproducing population of them right here in Central MN.

Cosmo and I took the afternoon off and went pheasant hunting in the fresh snow yesterday.  Tried some new spots that I have never hunted before.  Raised 28 total.  I got a double at the second spot.  Two roosters flushed simultaneously and I dropped both of them.  The first one one fell dead but the second one went down as a cripple.  After retrieving the dead one, I went over to where the second one went down and after some good dog work, Cosmo came out of a patch of grass with it.  Then the final spot produced another rooster for a December limit.  Hunting after a fresh snow is quite often my most productive and enjoyable hunt of the entire season.

Did you ever trade the 30-30?  If not would you consider selling?

Caught some crappies on the north end of Osakis on Nov 15th. Pulled from 25-27 feet. All laid on their side in the live well. All kept but one.

On the south end...   Ice continues to form and make progress on Lake of the Woods.  With that being said, it is going to take some time before it is safe and fish houses are out.  Resort ice guides have been out checking ice thickness, flying drones over the ice and basically staying on top of current conditions.   Back bays are locked up and there is some spearing for pike that has been happening.  Ice conditions even in back bays vary, so for safety, please work through resorts and outfitters.   Most of Big Traverse Bay is ice covered.  There are still patches of open water, some cracks that have opened up, etc.  This is typical for this time of year and it will be a bit yet before most can give the green light.     Lake of the Woods is big and there are many areas of the lake resorts and outfitters go out on.  Each business will be monitoring ice conditions in their area and make informed decisions when it is allowed to access the ice through their ice access and what weight limits will be allowed. Resorts and outfitters have started marking trails on the ice in bays and close to shore.  When it is time to get out on the ice, we encourage working through resorts and outfitters and staying on marked trails for safety. On the Rainy River...   The Rainy River is ice covered.  Local resorts and ice guides are monitoring ice conditions in areas of the river they offer ice fishing.  As you have read in this report previously, work through a resort or outfitter for safety reasons.      Up at the NW Angle...  The Angle is ice covered (as a whole).  Outfitters and ice guides have been marking ice trails.  The ice roads and trails are not open yet, but much of the ice has frozen smooth and is coming along very nicely. There are always areas throughout the winter where there is current up at the Angle so it is important to stay on the marked trails, both when they open up and throughout the ice fishing season, which goes through March, Mother Nature dependent on course.

Are you still planning on walking out there tomorrow? Has the ice actually thickened yet?
