Big Watab in St. Joseph

Recommended Posts

Actually Big Watab (with trout) is near Avon and Little Watab is near St. Joseph. I was on Big Watab sometime at the end of June and we had good success bobber fishing with night crawlers. Get there early if you want a parking spot at the landing. It fills up fast.

Yes Nels, Big Watab is by St. Joe. My Uncle has a place right on the lake and the crawlers or corn is what we have always used to catch Trout. There is a deep spot on the south end of the lake I believe that is about 135 ft. deep ???? But I have not been out there yet this year.

Thanks for the reply!!

Is this the "Studer" that graduated from St. Cloud Apollo in 1989?

I have been having some good luck on the Rainbows on Watab lately.

Slip floats with crawlers and or corn has worked for me. The fish seem to be holding at 20-30' down over 50' of water.

I lost a real nice one tonight at the net, I would guess it was 18-20 inches!

I was out on Big Watab two weeks ago and did very well on the Crappies. Not a lot of size to them but I was catching them on every cast with a little plastic body on a small jig head in about 25 feet of water. I was under the impression that there weren't many crappies in this lake. I guess I was either wrong or I found the only school in the lake.

Tons of crappies in Big Watab. Icefishing last feb I dropped an AquaVu down and saw something like 200-300 crappies in one massive school. We could watch them look at our bait but not bite. Only caught a couple of sunnies that were indeed hungry. On the cam we also saw a 4-5lb pike chase all the crappies away. Yes, they are in there...

Hey Chris what's up man?

T.Weis here! Do you still live out in Joe-ville. Or are you a city slicker now? :-)

Yeah, Watab is an awesome little lake. Not many lakes around that can support a nice trout population like it does.
Good to here from a ya! Take care!

Don't forget about the bass population in that lake. Lots of great structure to fish them makes it a blast (drop offs, points, flats). Rig some worms and get the net ready!

Does anyone know if there is any walleye action taking place on Big Watab right now? I usually go out to Koronis in the late fall but I would like to give Big Watab a try once.
