Report - Sauk Lake Bass

Recommended Posts

Here goes my first post on fishingmn.com.

My Father and I spent around 5 hours on Big Sauk last Saturday. Spent some time pitching jigs up in 4-5 ft. on the north end, cranked some some deep weedlines on the west side, and pitched to shoreline cover for a while with a jig-n-craw. Only caught one fish, around 18 inches, under the Highway 71 bridge.

Can anyone out there help me with how to fish this lake for bass? Is there any type of deep bite out there (15-18 ft) during the summer? I did find a few nice spots of hard bottom on the deep weedline, but no fish. Should I spend more time shallow, throw different baits, etc???

Thanks in advance for any help!

I know the big fish just got done spawning and I have a feeling the pull back into that matted weed you see all over the lake, I really have no idea how to get them out of there but i know they are in it. I've flipped pockets and fish rats over the top of it and only have gotten small fish, but you can cruise of the top of it and see big fish swimming around in it.

I was out there on sat and probably caught about 30 fish, biggest was around 5. Most of the fish i caught were cruising the sand, jigs are a little fast falling this time of year, stick with baits that sink really slow(weightless lizards/tubes) so the fish have a chance to see it.

One of the problems with fishing lately could be the milfoil pullers that are constantly cruising the lake. I really don't know what the point of them are, since the weeds go down on their own shortly anyway, but that's a whole different topic.
I next to the lake and I have yet to figure it out. One day I can go out wormin' for two hours and catch 5 fish over 5 lbs. under one tree. The next day I can go out for 5 hours and only catch two fish under two lbs. I not really much of a bass expert, but I can tell you there are hogs in there and worth the time working for them. I have had luck on spinnerbaits, pig and jigs, and crank baits, but not nearly enough consistancy to give any sure fire tips.

Hey guys it's good to see some talk about Sauk. We have been fishing the panfish and have hooked into a few of the bigger bass (in the 4to5 lbs range). They seem to be moving out to the outside of the weed edges that we fish. Hope you all have good luck. If you see a green Sportfish with black on the back give a wave I know there are a few out there my is the one the six year old that can be heard though out the lake.
