manure spill

Recommended Posts

has any one fished the sauk after the 100,000 gallons of manure spilled into mill creek (rockville part) which empties into the sauk. biologists said it would be a few days before the effects are seen on the fish. I guess manure or the bacteria in manure severely depleats the oxygen level in the water, and could kill a lot of fish. hopefully its not as bad as the times makes it out to be. Good Luck on the lake, the panfish are still hitting on the chain pretty decent.

how in the heck did that happen?, where is mill creek?, is that upstream from the horshoe chain or downstream?.

Downstream, it is near Rockville.

Very sad indeed, hope they got it cleaned up as best as possible.

Yeah I remember several years back when Golden Plump had an ammonia leak that emptied into the river. The water was very low and it killed everything for several miles downstream. That was very sad.

Hopefully this will not have as negative of effect.

Broken pipeline/valve in a feedlot. High praise to the Rockville fire department for their early work containing the spill, and to the Rockville community at large for pitching in and helping with the cleanup. Ther were a whole lot of people ankle deep in sh-- shoveling and pumping to clean up that mess.

Thats why his name is city slicker. I have a hog farm and have never had a manure spill but accidents happen. Its the guys that deliberatly unload manure right into the river or tile line that give us guys bad names.

Slicker, you're really not as ignorant as you make yourself out to be. Some "manure" does have monetary value that the producers actually do get paid for. Albeit it's not usually delivered via waterway. rolleyes.gif

I just like to cause trouble. Farmers get away with murder. They can destroy the land and waters with the chemicals spray on their crops and feed to their animals. And if they have a bad crop the goverment will just give them a check. I wish I got a check when I my company had a bad year.

City,
If it weren't for the farmers you wouldn't see a lot of the food that you put on your table.

CitySlicker-
I guess I would have to say that this is not a place to bash people, including farmers. Second thing: Give us your name and address and we will begin to send you checks so you can stop feeling sorry for yourself. Third thing, if farming is so great, why don't you take that up as a business. Now, back to fishing!

Wow, what an example slicker is setting for the city dwellers. It is unfortunate that this manure spill was in an environmentally sensitive area. It is also unfortunate that people don't understand the reasoning and purpose of farming subsidies. I suppose that city boy thinks that his poop don't stink.....

Do you think he knows why the manure is stored in a tank??

Do you think he knows what the final destination of the manure is??

Well I'll tell ya anyway.......it is stored and landspread as fertilizer. Certain components to some degree end up in the rainwater runoff and in the creeks and rivers anyway.

It's not the organic matter depleting the local DO levels that causes long term problems. The minerals in the manure are the main concern with both the landspreading and the occasional spills. Phosporous in particular is a concern for its ability to promote algae growth. This algae eventually dies and decomposes.....which continues depleting oxygen.

If you want to try to put tougher restrictions on the farmers.......good luck. They are pretty strict already, and the margins for farmers are pretty small. If farming was that attractive as a career, then why aren't there more farmers. I for one am not willing to pay for additional enforcement through raised taxes and higher meat and produce costs. In general, it appears that today's laws regarding manure landspreading(and yes the city boys sludge is included in modern landspreading programs)are adequate and are working to clean up surface waters in the US.

Can we do more?

Sure.....but then you have to ask who is going to pay for it.

  • Official Fishing Report Team - MN

The Hansens are real respected farmers in the area and I feel they the voulenteers and the fire dept did a excellent job of takeing care of the spill. I was readinfg the paper tonight and they said only a handfull of fish died, mostly carp and suckers. I feel we should comend the efforts of the people rather then critisize them. Accidents happen to people everyday so there is no reason to get down on anyone.

well said icehawk, i know several family members and its wrong for people to judge them based on a farm accident. The paper stated everybody did an excellent job in containing what they could.

As someone who works directly and indirectly with these types of incidents I can say it sounds like everyone involved did as much as possible to minimize the impacts of the release. As WWguru has stated there are pretty strict regulations regarding the storage and application rates of the different types of manure/fertilizer. It doesn't matter if the source is turkey, chicken, hog, sheep, dairy, cattle, city/municipal, etc. it is all regulated. Accidents do and will happen, an updated and effective Release/Response Plan is essential in minimizing the impacts any release may have on the environment. Just my $.02 worth.

Caught some crappies on the north end of Osakis on Nov 15th. Pulled from 25-27 feet. All laid on their side in the live well. All kept but one.

On the south end...   Ice continues to form and make progress on Lake of the Woods.  With that being said, it is going to take some time before it is safe and fish houses are out.  Resort ice guides have been out checking ice thickness, flying drones over the ice and basically staying on top of current conditions.   Back bays are locked up and there is some spearing for pike that has been happening.  Ice conditions even in back bays vary, so for safety, please work through resorts and outfitters.   Most of Big Traverse Bay is ice covered.  There are still patches of open water, some cracks that have opened up, etc.  This is typical for this time of year and it will be a bit yet before most can give the green light.     Lake of the Woods is big and there are many areas of the lake resorts and outfitters go out on.  Each business will be monitoring ice conditions in their area and make informed decisions when it is allowed to access the ice through their ice access and what weight limits will be allowed. Resorts and outfitters have started marking trails on the ice in bays and close to shore.  When it is time to get out on the ice, we encourage working through resorts and outfitters and staying on marked trails for safety. On the Rainy River...   The Rainy River is ice covered.  Local resorts and ice guides are monitoring ice conditions in areas of the river they offer ice fishing.  As you have read in this report previously, work through a resort or outfitter for safety reasons.      Up at the NW Angle...  The Angle is ice covered (as a whole).  Outfitters and ice guides have been marking ice trails.  The ice roads and trails are not open yet, but much of the ice has frozen smooth and is coming along very nicely. There are always areas throughout the winter where there is current up at the Angle so it is important to stay on the marked trails, both when they open up and throughout the ice fishing season, which goes through March, Mother Nature dependent on course.

'we have more fun' I Share On FishingMN  152 Posted January 25, 2017 Hey Moose ... what size Pug Bug do you typically use?  Smaller or bigger on your locale lake?   also, do you use the xl maki minnow or the smaller regular one?  For Crappies, noticed that the xl seems to catch bigger fish but not as much quantity?  Curious about your thoughts?

I caught a few eyes... we're getting a dusting of snow tonight. I probably won't fish much until we get more ice and snow as I like running the sled. Really don't like ice fishing much, do it more for something to do as there's not much to do in the winter. I'm going to start bobcat trapping this winter though

awe yea......kettle my friend.......you forgot t tell us if you caught any fish????🤣🤗
