tulibees

Recommended Posts

Was wondering if anyone fishes tulibees around the Avon, Richmond area. The DNR net surveys on Middle Spunk Lake looked good, if anyone knows any good tulibee lakes please let me know. I know they are starting to bite around my home near Ottertail.

I can stear you to a lake that has a fantastic Tulibee population. It is about 75 miles North West of St. Cloud the lake name is Pillager. It is a very small lake at about 250 acres and the DNR data shows an unbelievable Tulibee population. My friend and I did some lake hopping this weekend and just selected this lake at random with no data before we fished it. We caught some very nice Tulibee. For those that keep this fish I am assuming it is smoked, correct?

Thanks but I was just lookin for lakes right around st. cloud. I go to school down here. I have fished several good lakes in OT county, but was just wonderin bout around here. Yes you do smoke them and I think they are delicious. They are a very oily fish which makes them good smokers.

Koronis and Schroeder (Blasius) are two lakes that hold a ample amount of tullibee's locally.

Pillager lake is in Cass county take County rd #1 about 5 miles North of Pillager. The access is on the South side in a county park. There also is a creek on the N end to be aware of, it feeds in from Rice lake and it does produce open water in front of it. Just a heads up for anyone ventureing out there.

Middle Spunk does have tulibees although I don't know of or heard of anyone that targets them. We used to catch a few while targeting crappies years ago. The ones we caught were nice.

If someone goes on Pillager be super careful for bad spots in the ice. Not sure if it is spring action or from schooling fish but there can be random thin spots to really ruin your day. 2 feet to 3 inches in a couple steps.

There is a creek flowing through it starting on the North end. This lake goes out pretty fast. It can be like fishing on a mine field. Be careful on this one. It is a small lake.

Tough to call on the bad spots as they seem to change year to year thats what kind of directs me to feel that schooling fish are the culprit. Wish I could be more specific but too random to call.

kander65, I have no real expertise to offer as this is really the first experience I have had with Tulibee/Cisco. For the time we were on Pilliger I used wax works and crappie jigs. The depth we fished was 36-38 feet and the fish did come in suspended at 20-24 feet. Tried minnows but not real success. The bite also seemed to be a mornign bite as it stopped after 10:30. Concerning the ice we drove a full size F-150 on the ice and folled the road out and then ventured away from the crowd. Wish I would have know about the ice issue before. The reason we drove was due to the fact that there were locals out there with full sized trucks.

Big Eyes, the lake is not that large I would guess it to be under 500 acre lake. We were out two weekends ago and the ice we drilled was 24 inches or more. At the time there was a plowed road that went out from the access and to the left. We followed this road out from the access and broke off to the right. Fished in 36 feet of water about 100-150 yards off of the shoreline. I have only the one time experience on this lake and would defer any comments on the safety of the ice to someone local. Some of the commets posted give the impression that ice on this lake is suspect. Be safe and if you get out post results.

Bucktail,

Best Tullie lake around there is Little Birch lake over by Grey Eagle.

I would concentrate on the deep hole out from the access or get permission and fish some of the deep neck down areas fruther up the lake. Nice craps in there too!!!!

Walked out about half a mile on Tuesday with max safety (life jacket, ice picks, long rope to house, and chisel).  Ice was very solid and I measured 7½" today (Thursday).  The first 1/8 mile was nice dark ice that was large chunks frozen together, but quite smooth.  Then there was about 40 feet of very jagged white ice.  Had to lift the portable over the points of ice otherwise it would hang up on them.  Then the next mile of ice was rough white ice as shown in the picture with the ice scoop.  At the small island before Birch Island the ice appears to be dark (and probably smoother).  Several snowmobiles and ATVs were running out as far as Birch Island but it was easy walking for me.   Fishing got better each day.  Rainbow and chubs were about equal.  Couldn't catch a fish on pike suckers.  Best fish was the 27" (8#-3oz) hog shown in the picture.  Had a hard time getting her head into the hole.  Picture quality is bad because I wanted to release her quickly to avoid further stress.  Good luck out there and be careful on the ice.

Measured 6" good clear ice today about 50 yards off the north side of Moccasin point. Walked out for a little ice fishing. Remember ice conditions vary around the lake, depending on sun exposure and current in channels/narrows. Be cautious, safe and verify your local ice conditions.  Directly off the Moccasin point boat landing, in the channel ice conditions looked poor. Picture is from Northside of Moccasin point I the early morning  when ice looks the best

Finished the 23 waterfowl season over Thanksgiving. Got to hunt two days of the long weekend. Saw a modest number of ducks, and harvested mallards, bluebills, and ringnecks as the water began freezing over during the weekend. One of our tougher seasons with different migration patterns probably due to unusual weather patterns with constant fluctuating between well above average temps for a period and then almost instantly well below temps before going well above again, and so forth. Still will cherish the memories with family and friends and relive the sights and sounds of out on the water during fall. Will be posting ice fishing reports in the fishing report clubs as soon as the ice is safe. Happy Holidays everyone.

Thanks for sharing this exciting career opportunity with Orvis in the Minneapolis area. It's great to see companies looking for passionate individuals to join their team, especially in the world of fly fishing.

Shocking, I know.  And what may be more surprising is that one need not head westward to find them either.  There is a thriving, reproducing population of them right here in Central MN.

Cosmo and I took the afternoon off and went pheasant hunting in the fresh snow yesterday.  Tried some new spots that I have never hunted before.  Raised 28 total.  I got a double at the second spot.  Two roosters flushed simultaneously and I dropped both of them.  The first one one fell dead but the second one went down as a cripple.  After retrieving the dead one, I went over to where the second one went down and after some good dog work, Cosmo came out of a patch of grass with it.  Then the final spot produced another rooster for a December limit.  Hunting after a fresh snow is quite often my most productive and enjoyable hunt of the entire season.

Did you ever trade the 30-30?  If not would you consider selling?
