I was just wondering if it is really that hard for people to bring their garbage off of the lake with them. I was out on the chain fishing today and cans, bottles, bags, paper, line, etc. littered the lakes. I just don't see why people can't throw it in their house or in a bucket and throw it away at home. All along Hwy 22 garbage is laying too. It is people like this that make everyone else look like pigs. I just wish people would have some respect and clean up after themselves. Just take your things home with you. -Ding

I totaly agree, I ran around with my fish trap and wheeler on the chain picking up garbgage. By the time I was done my whole trap was full of junk. It amazes me how much people leave on the ice.

I agree! I was on Clearwater a couple weeks ago and there was an empty case of Mt. Dew sitting right next to some open holes. I dont understand how people do that. I know an empty can may fly out the back of a truck sometime, but no way can all the trash be because of that. Some people will never change, its typical, though, the minority always ruins things for the majority.

I agree! This is the time of year that the snow melts and the crap surfaces all over the lake. I imagine these people live the same way at home. No respect for the environment at all so once again it's up to the people that do to pick up after these clowns.

I definitely agree. When I took my house off pleasant lake some jerk left a empty case of 40oz bottle of beer, cigarette butts, and assorted garbage on the ice. Another fisherman whose house had been broken into(supposedly by this guy)was waiting for the sheriff to show up. Hope they got this guy.

But we've lost a lot of access due to these pigs. I had a couple of great early spring panfish spots that are no longer available because of these jerks leaving their garbage in someone's yard. I'd bring home two garbage bags of garbage everytime I went out and still didn't put a dent in it.

I'll refer you to the thread at URL. Someone who wouldn't help someone in need probably doesn't clean up his mess either.

I just thought that I would see what the rest of you thought about this topic. Went out there again tonight with an uncle who lives on the chain, and he said it is all over the ice, everywhere. Good thing people like us are around to clean it up. If you guys haven't seen it yet, you should check out the article at www.startribun.com/stories about the guy on Red Lake like IFALLSRON was talking about. Good Fishing, ding

ATTENTION: "common sense challenged" people who leave garbage on the ice, we know you're reading about yourselves here. Change your user name if you want and let us know why you can't pick up after yourself on the ice. It would be interesting to hear. But don't worry, the rest of us will continue to clean up after you. After all my dog can't clean up after himself either. frown.gif

Hey, how about this too. I know this isn't as big of a deal as trash on the lake, but it's in the same type of catagory. How about killing fish such as carp and catfish just to see them float??? Yes, I've seen this happen to cats not just carp. I can't stand to see this activity happen on the chain. It's just unbeliveable how some people are. If they fished the Chain about a year ago, they'd know how much of affect the cats have had on the bullhead population. Too MAD to do on!!!

Skeets,
Thank you for taking to the time to clean up after these slobs. It's much appriciated by the REAL sportsmen. I also can't believe how lazy people are when it comes to trash. It takes just a couple extra seconds of your time to throw this stuff in a bag. I see it happen all the time here at school too. People just throw their spent cigs all over the place. It's disgusting as hell just to smell the stuff, but now I have to look at all the butts from the past 4 months. ARGGH.

the cats have done a great job on the bullheads, they have been gone for years, and cats have also added another unique quarry to the diverse fishery. one thing i hate to say is as long as i have fished the chain, the garbage (refering to the litter and the scum ball fishermen) have gotten worse every year. i know from the posts that some of you use a few of the wonderful private accesses on the shoe, thanks for keeping them clean, but not to many years ago we were shortly cut off from one due to people littering and running their 4-wheelers threw the owners yard. no respect! so i guess all we can do is preech to others, pick up their crap and hope for the best. i seriously dought that any serious FMer or sportman for that matter would litter. GOOD LUCK!

It is sad to say but it has really been getting worse in the past years. Going to school in Bemidji, I see a lot of garbage on lakes and on the roads, but the chain seems to almost top them all for some reason. Even in the summer at the landings, cases of beer and garbage all over the place, bottles floating on the water. It almost takes away some of the fun being outdoors looking at it all. Well, heading to Red Lake in 45 minutes, good luck to all. -Ding

Well,
No different on Red. Garbage everywhere. Cans, Bottles, Boxes. I guess with the exception of those of us who care it really is hard for people to clean up. Oh well, good thing for us!!!!!!!!

here are a few of my favorites:   1) cube breast meat, marinate in Italian dressing over night, wrap in bacon, grill    2) cube breast meat, cover with shore lunch or any other breading batter of your choice, flour/egg wash etc if you like that, fry and enjoy just like little chicken nuggets   3) cube breast meat, season with salt, pepper, garlic, quickly fry in pan serve over rice, can also look up  South Dakota version of chislic similar to this   4) cream of something soup, crock pot with what ever you want lol   5) pheasant and dumpling soup   6) this one is a little bit of work but good stuff: https://fromfieldtoplate.com/2016/08/16/sesame-pheasant-garden-veggie-stir-fry/   I tend to save all my legs and prepare them together. For example this last weekend I shot 2 birds on Sat and 3 on Sunday for a total of 10 legs. Put them all in a crock pot, with beefbroth and a can or 2 of dr pepper to make sure they are call covered. cook on low until tender. pull all tendons etc out and shred any meat you can salvage. add  barbeque sauce and serve on a bun and toppings of your choice. will be very similar to pulled pork.   I hate wasting legs, and I hate even more seeing others not utilize them and just breast out birds and leave the legs to rot     My team of GSP's have been putting the hurt on birds this year here in SD. pleasantly surprised with numbers after the brutal winter we had. probably had my best year of sharptail hunting that I can ever recall in my lifetime also.

You can prepare/cook them pretty much any way you make chicken.  The taste and texture is very similar.  I'm sure I could do what Moose posted above with his grouse and the finished product would be almost identical.   My favorite recipe is a slow cook in a cast iron pot.  That takes some time because it requires cooking at low temperature for at least 90 minutes.  The finished product is very good.   Being that its so warm out, I might try grilling some here too.   I also give a few away each season.  My possession limit is triple the daily bag limit so its something I have to be mindful of before I go hunting again.

Walked out about half a mile on Tuesday with max safety (life jacket, ice picks, long rope to house, and chisel).  Ice was very solid and I measured 7½" today (Thursday).  The first 1/8 mile was nice dark ice that was large chunks frozen together, but quite smooth.  Then there was about 40 feet of very jagged white ice.  Had to lift the portable over the points of ice otherwise it would hang up on them.  Then the next mile of ice was rough white ice as shown in the picture with the ice scoop.  At the small island before Birch Island the ice appears to be dark (and probably smoother).  Several snowmobiles and ATVs were running out as far as Birch Island but it was easy walking for me.   Fishing got better each day.  Rainbow and chubs were about equal.  Couldn't catch a fish on pike suckers.  Best fish was the 27" (8#-3oz) hog shown in the picture.  Had a hard time getting her head into the hole.  Picture quality is bad because I wanted to release her quickly to avoid further stress.  Good luck out there and be careful on the ice.

Measured 6" good clear ice today about 50 yards off the north side of Moccasin point. Walked out for a little ice fishing. Remember ice conditions vary around the lake, depending on sun exposure and current in channels/narrows. Be cautious, safe and verify your local ice conditions.  Directly off the Moccasin point boat landing, in the channel ice conditions looked poor. Picture is from Northside of Moccasin point I the early morning  when ice looks the best

Finished the 23 waterfowl season over Thanksgiving. Got to hunt two days of the long weekend. Saw a modest number of ducks, and harvested mallards, bluebills, and ringnecks as the water began freezing over during the weekend. One of our tougher seasons with different migration patterns probably due to unusual weather patterns with constant fluctuating between well above average temps for a period and then almost instantly well below temps before going well above again, and so forth. Still will cherish the memories with family and friends and relive the sights and sounds of out on the water during fall. Will be posting ice fishing reports in the fishing report clubs as soon as the ice is safe. Happy Holidays everyone.
