Bait shops

Recommended Posts

Coach: Not sure which way you are coming from. There is a bait shop in Rockville, also the SA station in Cold Spring. Rockville would be my first choice. Bill

Coach-
If you can, get minnows BEFORE hitting Richmond, as I heard from several people that they are out of decent sized crappie minnows, and completely out of fatheads. Super America in Cold Spring had decent crappie minnows a couple weeks ago, but that's it. I would recommend getting minnows in the cities if you can.

The baitshop in Rockville had fatheads last weekend and Richmond Marine had them last weekend, although Richmond Marine isn't open on Sundays.

Here is what I know: Mike's bait in EV always has fatheads. and the Richmond marine had fatheads last weekend. I can get you the number but its out in the van let me know if you need either of the #'s I have both.

Icehawk: do you get into the marine often? If so chuck me an e-mail. I need to find out what the company is that made the jigs I was using last weekend. I need to find a few cards.

Sunday will be my first trip to Horseshoe looking for cats and is wondering where the closest bait shops are in the area? Catfishing in the winter has to be a great time, thanks for the info.

Thanks for all help, I am coming from the cities going early Sunday. Should I setup near the bottom or are the cats normally suspended? My son is really excited about catfishing, he plays baseball and I am coaching so we do not get too many chances to get out during the summer. Again, thanks for any info, no matter how they bite, it will be a fun day.

Coach, don't rule out other baits like chicken parts or packaged cat baits. I do well with these this time of year. I also found that most of the Cats I caught preferred crappie minnows instead of fatheads. Could make a big difference in your catch rates.

Last weekend the color of choice was red glow jigs (like glow devils) and So Haaad's dad was using chicken livers and doing better than most. Last weeks bite was also pretty lite in most cases the occasional cat would come in slamming but more often the would just barely touch the bait. So slip bobbers almost submerged worked well and the slightest movement of the boober meant one was on. Also break the minnows in half if vertical jigging using the head. Hope this helps and have fun. I may try to work a day in this weekend out there so maybe we'll see you there.

Mykal - Chemist, thanks for your input. There is one more thing that I am concerned about, I have a 3/4 ton pickup and being that I have never been on this lake and all of the other posts about the meth hole and all, are people driving on yet or how far of a walk will it be to get to the spots? Chemist, if you see a blue 3/4 Ford with a topper please stop by, it would be great to meet you. Thanks again for all the help.

There has not been too many people driving out there the past few days.
The ice was starting to honeycomb in places, but has since firmed up the past two nights.
The best way to travel is foot or ATV.

I'm curious to see what the snow will do, also. My dad was out there on Wednesday, and said nobody was driving out. He also said that many of the holes from last weekend could be opened easily just using a chisel. I'm hoping to get out on Saturday. Hopefully it won't be a mad zoo out there like last Saturday. Dennis, you going to make it out?

I would not suggest driving on. It was really sloppy last weekend. As for the meth hole it should be very visable by now. last weekend I could pick it out from about 100yds or so. Shoot me an e-mail and I will see if I can get a map of where it is located.

We only got a few inches in the Richmond area.

No big deal.

The ice should still be in good shape for this weekend, but would not reccomend driving.

Seen as the topic is Bait shops. Does anyone know of any bait shops that have grass shrimp?

Nells Bells- You wouldn't be heading to Osakis Would you? I haven't been able to locate any at any of the bait shops I've tried. I even tried some of the bait shops in Osakis and they aren't even carrying it. If you find some let me know.

You are correct sir! I'm heading there tomorrow morning. I had heard that a bait shop in Sauk Centre had them, but I don't know which one. I called the SA in Sauk but they dont have any. What are some of the others?

I would imagine Fletchers in Sauk would have them. He is a dealer and has the best bait around and one of the few guys who carries grass shrimp.

Gill Hunter- I called them and yes they must have been the bait shop that I had heard about but the bad news is that when I called, the lady that answered said that they had just ran out. Bummer! The search goes on. Thanks for the info. anyway.

Walked out about half a mile on Tuesday with max safety (life jacket, ice picks, long rope to house, and chisel).  Ice was very solid and I measured 7½" today (Thursday).  The first 1/8 mile was nice dark ice that was large chunks frozen together, but quite smooth.  Then there was about 40 feet of very jagged white ice.  Had to lift the portable over the points of ice otherwise it would hang up on them.  Then the next mile of ice was rough white ice as shown in the picture with the ice scoop.  At the small island before Birch Island the ice appears to be dark (and probably smoother).  Several snowmobiles and ATVs were running out as far as Birch Island but it was easy walking for me.   Fishing got better each day.  Rainbow and chubs were about equal.  Couldn't catch a fish on pike suckers.  Best fish was the 27" (8#-3oz) hog shown in the picture.  Had a hard time getting her head into the hole.  Picture quality is bad because I wanted to release her quickly to avoid further stress.  Good luck out there and be careful on the ice.

Measured 6" good clear ice today about 50 yards off the north side of Moccasin point. Walked out for a little ice fishing. Remember ice conditions vary around the lake, depending on sun exposure and current in channels/narrows. Be cautious, safe and verify your local ice conditions.  Directly off the Moccasin point boat landing, in the channel ice conditions looked poor. Picture is from Northside of Moccasin point I the early morning  when ice looks the best

Finished the 23 waterfowl season over Thanksgiving. Got to hunt two days of the long weekend. Saw a modest number of ducks, and harvested mallards, bluebills, and ringnecks as the water began freezing over during the weekend. One of our tougher seasons with different migration patterns probably due to unusual weather patterns with constant fluctuating between well above average temps for a period and then almost instantly well below temps before going well above again, and so forth. Still will cherish the memories with family and friends and relive the sights and sounds of out on the water during fall. Will be posting ice fishing reports in the fishing report clubs as soon as the ice is safe. Happy Holidays everyone.

Thanks for sharing this exciting career opportunity with Orvis in the Minneapolis area. It's great to see companies looking for passionate individuals to join their team, especially in the world of fly fishing.

Shocking, I know.  And what may be more surprising is that one need not head westward to find them either.  There is a thriving, reproducing population of them right here in Central MN.

Cosmo and I took the afternoon off and went pheasant hunting in the fresh snow yesterday.  Tried some new spots that I have never hunted before.  Raised 28 total.  I got a double at the second spot.  Two roosters flushed simultaneously and I dropped both of them.  The first one one fell dead but the second one went down as a cripple.  After retrieving the dead one, I went over to where the second one went down and after some good dog work, Cosmo came out of a patch of grass with it.  Then the final spot produced another rooster for a December limit.  Hunting after a fresh snow is quite often my most productive and enjoyable hunt of the entire season.
