truck went down

Recommended Posts

Word from a good friend that his sons fishing buddy dropped his truck through on Big Swan, in the narrows. That area is never good for vehicle traffic no matter how cold it gets. Only 4 ft of water but still a huge expense for his insurance company. Thank god he got out all right. Bill

That's not the first one to go down in the narrows this year. That area is dangerous all season long. Like you said not deep but a pain in the butt when they go down!!

That spot has been trouble for years, wonder why people keep thinking they can get up to the other end through there. It's never safe there no matter how cold it gets. A player I coach on my basketball team had his brother break through before Christmas trying to pull their perm up to the north end. Quite an ordeal getting it up and to safety from his story. Was out there 3 weeks ago and there must have been 20 houses piled up just south of the narrows. We were making bets on if any of them were going to try to come across but none did, thank god!.! Good fishing to be had on the north end but safety first as always...

Glad he got out o.k. but I think the insurance stops once you willingly drive off of land and onto the ice. Hope he's been saving $$$$$

Depends on the insurance co. You have to verify with the company/agent that you are covered. I think alot of the big companies cover vehicles on lake ice. I know I am covered.

Bad deal. I have heard of this spot often and I have only lived in this are for a couple of years. Why is this area so bad....current? Does anyone mark the lake at all for dangerous ice? That would be a great idea and might save some serious problems for folks. Anyway, pulling the truck out will be cheaper than paying for a funeral...glad to hear all are ok!

Being you are an insurance guy by trade, is falling though the ice covered by insurance or is it an add-on. I have heard it both ways and am not sure what to believe

Sorry I'm late getting back to you guys, just got back from Lake of the Woods last night.

If you carry comp on your auto policy you have coverage for going through the ice. The cost of retrieval, and damage to the vehicle are covered. Generally most compaies will total a vehicle that has gone down, especially if it was fully submerged becuase any future problems as a result of the loss are also covered ie: electrical wiring, mold, rotting of carpets, smell in the vehicle. So they will generally just total the vehicle and cut there losses. As one of my claim adjusters once told me "we do insure stupidity".

If you recall in Januray a truck went down in Pearl Lake. Jimbo and his crew were able to get it out, the pictures were in the St Cloud Times. I inusred that vehicle, however because of the age of the truck, it only had liability, we had no coverage for that one. Bill

Thanks for sharing this exciting career opportunity with Orvis in the Minneapolis area. It's great to see companies looking for passionate individuals to join their team, especially in the world of fly fishing.

Shocking, I know.  And what may be more surprising is that one need not head westward to find them either.  There is a thriving, reproducing population of them right here in Central MN.

Cosmo and I took the afternoon off and went pheasant hunting in the fresh snow yesterday.  Tried some new spots that I have never hunted before.  Raised 28 total.  I got a double at the second spot.  Two roosters flushed simultaneously and I dropped both of them.  The first one one fell dead but the second one went down as a cripple.  After retrieving the dead one, I went over to where the second one went down and after some good dog work, Cosmo came out of a patch of grass with it.  Then the final spot produced another rooster for a December limit.  Hunting after a fresh snow is quite often my most productive and enjoyable hunt of the entire season.

Did you ever trade the 30-30?  If not would you consider selling?

Caught some crappies on the north end of Osakis on Nov 15th. Pulled from 25-27 feet. All laid on their side in the live well. All kept but one.

On the south end...   Ice continues to form and make progress on Lake of the Woods.  With that being said, it is going to take some time before it is safe and fish houses are out.  Resort ice guides have been out checking ice thickness, flying drones over the ice and basically staying on top of current conditions.   Back bays are locked up and there is some spearing for pike that has been happening.  Ice conditions even in back bays vary, so for safety, please work through resorts and outfitters.   Most of Big Traverse Bay is ice covered.  There are still patches of open water, some cracks that have opened up, etc.  This is typical for this time of year and it will be a bit yet before most can give the green light.     Lake of the Woods is big and there are many areas of the lake resorts and outfitters go out on.  Each business will be monitoring ice conditions in their area and make informed decisions when it is allowed to access the ice through their ice access and what weight limits will be allowed. Resorts and outfitters have started marking trails on the ice in bays and close to shore.  When it is time to get out on the ice, we encourage working through resorts and outfitters and staying on marked trails for safety. On the Rainy River...   The Rainy River is ice covered.  Local resorts and ice guides are monitoring ice conditions in areas of the river they offer ice fishing.  As you have read in this report previously, work through a resort or outfitter for safety reasons.      Up at the NW Angle...  The Angle is ice covered (as a whole).  Outfitters and ice guides have been marking ice trails.  The ice roads and trails are not open yet, but much of the ice has frozen smooth and is coming along very nicely. There are always areas throughout the winter where there is current up at the Angle so it is important to stay on the marked trails, both when they open up and throughout the ice fishing season, which goes through March, Mother Nature dependent on course.
