That's too bad. It seems everytime I go out I end up next to people whether summer or winter. Not much you can do if you don't own the lake. It is only going to get much worse as the population of the state continues to expand. Immigration from neighboring states and other countries as well as locals somehow thinking it is a good idea to have 6 kids will eventually add so many people that reservations will be needed to catch a stocked fish out of our intensely managed lakes. More people = lower quality environment and life.

Rockhardinmn,

Sorry to hear about your bad experience! I live on a lake in the area so I fish a lot. I run into these clowns all year round. It’s either there crowding you or leaving their trash on the ice. Don’t stoop to TJW’s level. Lead by example and if you have kids teach them what fishing etiquette is all about, respect for others & the environment.

i agree 100% crusher . dont realy have problem with someone moving in ,, just cut your holes and fish . he was told that the fish were there and what was happening by his cutting of holes .. so sometimes its just like most of a parents taught us with a spanking. only thing is if i spanked hjim he is the type that would sue you .. so need to teach another way and what i said is aboutthe only way you can teach some folks. this is not a metro or cloud problem alone either . had a guy cut holes on bowstring close enough to me and friends that he threw ice in to my holes once . solved that one by asking him to move his truck so i could fish where his transfer case was . he told me its a big lake pick another spot. all i said was that is something that should have been condsidered a short time ago. pulled up my lines and told buddies 1 way or other i am fishing under that transfer case and fired up my auger. by the time i had line of holes from his passager door to his bumper the guy says what are you doing? all i said is your right it is a big lake and you picked a spot so close to me i had to clean my holes , so now i pick under your transfer case and 1 way or the other i will fish it and dont realy give )%*r0)&r$()*$ how i do it . so the guy left ,, seen him fish reasonable distances from me after that .. hope he learned something . i will say this Crusher ,, there are somethings that are done that are say rather extreme in some situations . other times it is those extreme measure that are needed to teach someone also . my hope is that they learn this and will not impose upon yourself or me in the future .

why is it that people must move on top of other fisherman . just this past week i was out to meet up with some buddys who have a perm house out , while there a group of 4 guys moved in , they were decent about it cleaned off the ice and sure they seen the fish so they set up and fished a very resonable distance from me and my buddies house who were not there yet . my pals arive 1 at least .. the other didnt and he had all the gear , so i cut their holes and gave him 2 of my rigs to fish with till he did arrive . no big deal to me ,, was happy to do it for him .. then here comes a guy in a portable with his name pasteres to the bottom of his house . goes to buddies place askes if he catching fish , he just got there and hardly gotthe borrowed lines in the water the 3 of us were in about a 40 foot area . TJW from st cloud decides to starts drilling holes . 1st 2 i could live with on both sides of me . then he starts to make a beeline in between my house my buddies and the other group of 4 .. at whic h point i went out there and said .. listen the fish are down there , why dont you set up and fish instead of spooking them . his comment was i have drilled on top ofthem many times and caught fish in a rather ignorant manner, he did stop fished and didnt move . i needed to head home to check on if 1 of the kids needed picked up . they didnt so headed backout . TJW decided to move his house again in between the 3 of us . he left after i got back i wonder if it had anything to do with the fact that i drove my truck over the top of his 1st spot which wasnt more that 25feet from where he reset up . i know i spooked the fish around my house by doing so cause the pal in my house watched the screen go blank as i pulled up..well TJW. next time i see you on this particular lake i will on purpose drive around your hous in whatever i am on ,, then start drilling holes around you . then you can figure out why the fish you marked are no longer there grin.gif

I don't agree. If busy lakes with crowds don't appeal to you, then find lakes that get less pressure, and alas, you will once again be a happy man. It cracks me up every time someone gets upset because people encroach upon their permanant fish house, the rule does say 10 feet, does it not? It seems to me that the time you've wasted posting complaints on this forum, you could have been finding a location where you can be all by yourself.

What it comes down to is common courtesy, there has been many a day when I have been on a lake and low and behold right at prime time I get some idiot drilling right next to my house. People now days just dont have common respect for other people as Mr Stearns has just shown. Its always whatever is best for me and forget the other guy. Unbeleivable how the world has changed.

Talking about setting up close. Me and a freind were set up in my perm. house when some other guys pulled up. they set up a tip up not 2' from the corner of my house. My buddy snagged his line with his jiggle stick tripping the flag. My freind and the other guy had about a minute of tug a war then i cut the line. A short time later when I was able to hold a straight face I went out and asked the guy how he was doing. He said he just had mobby dick on his tip up. My friend and on just got a good laugh and a hook and leader. We were going to return the tackle to the guy but we thought the fish story was worth more than a hook and leader.

now thats rolling with the punches wally. 90% of the people out there are just out to have a good time and do not care about how intense others are about the fishing game. life is tough sometimes, but there are many over looked spots on even the smallest lakes.

I agree with Stearns here. I've also read many posts about how upset people get when someone fires up an auger at 4 or 5:00pm during prime time. Well, some people have jobs, and families and can't get out earlier. I get the impression sometimes if you can't get on the ice by 2:00, stay home or you'll get "the look" from other anglers. I don't agree with that. I try to be courteous, and use common sense every time I go out on the lake. Good luck everyone.

I agree with everyone except "Mr. Stearns" You cannot tell me you will just sit there when people are firing up the augers within 10 feet of you, and you cannot even begin to say that it makes you happy, and that you dont get mad when you have plenty of action going, seeing fish on the vexilar and then the screen goes blank and it starts to be a waste of time. Its the people like you and the others that make people mad, look how big the lake is, you dont need to be right on stop of someone, what good is it anyway? Good luck everyone, hopefully we wont have to deal with any of these idiots.

JHansel7, Once again, where in my post do you get the impression that I "enjoy" a dozen augers drilling right next to me? I don't, but take a look at where you live, this for all practical purposes is a metropolitian area with thousands of people many of which fish just like you and I. So yes, some of those people are rude, but what do you do? Sink their truck? Hit someone? Give me break. If that is your solution to this scenario, be careful who you engage with behavior like that. If the fish were biting before all the commotion they will bite again or somewhere else. An inconvinence? yep, but get used to it because it's going to get worse as the weather starts to change.

P.S if your looking for a quiet, uncrowded lake, don't go to any that are discussed on the St.Cloud forum

Hey WallyObsession:
Great post man! We had a similar experience a couple weeks ago....man was it hilarious. We're fishing on the Mississippi River in a spot where there is virtually no current. My brother and myself in one house, and 3 of our friends in another, probably 10 feet upstream. Well I catch the first 'eye, probably about 12".....then one of our friends starts going crazy, yelling about how huge of a walleye he has on....well we go investigate, and the thing is really taking out line. After a minute or 2, when I realize the fish is now going downstream, i go back to our house and check to make sure we aren't getting tangled. Well both of the rods are caught on it, so I start reeling it in.....as I suspected, he had snagged a carp with his buckshot rattle spoon. Well my bro comes back in, and we take our lines off, and release the carp (we couldn't get it through the hole since it was snagged mid-body and probably weighed 8 pounds). So we have this kid's line in our hands, and since he's usually pretty stingy about paying for bait or gas, we decide to play along with him for awhile. So we cut off the lure, and started feeding some of the line back to him. He's like "Yeah! I'm making progress....." and we're like "sweet, tell us when he's getting close"....next we decide to really let him have it, so we start pulling the line back in as fast as we can...I guess he ran out of line, because eventually we hear a loud SNAP!, followed by much profanity....TO THIS DAY, HE STILL THINKS HE HAD A 10 POUND WALLEYE ON! BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Nowhere in my fist post did I imply that I think it's Ok to crowd other anglers or that I myself fish stacked up like cord wood. What I disagree with is the incessant complaining I hear about local lakes, and the threats about doing harm to fish houses and vehicles.

Have people ever fished too close to me, you bet. But the difference between me and you is that I don't anger quickly and start shooting off at the mouth. If this hypothetical person was too close to me and asked how the fishing was, I would respond that due to the massive amount of activity, the fish were no longer biting. That would hint at the possibility, that by fishing right next to me he may have chased the fish away. Then I would pack up and move.

Tell me, who is the worse sportsman, the person who fishes to close or the one who makes a poor attempt at teaching someone a lesson by drilling around their truck? (which I seriously doubt really happened) Is it possible that these people who made you so mad are new to the sport? Did you try to engage them in a cililized conversation before you passed judgement? Thats fine if everybody on this topic wants to take "Mr. Stearns" and make me look like the bad guy, but I suggest you analyze your own behavior. The fact is that you are not likely to run into me on the ice, I make all attempts to avoid people, that is I fish on lakes that don't have large popualtions of perm. houses.

Interesting stream...

I own a summer cabin on Lake Amelia near Glenwood. It is a decent fishing lake but with my job...just bit to far to shoot out with the kids.

As a result...I neede a spot closer to home. Though this forum I was put on a spot by Crusher. My boys and I put our house out at what I hope is a respectable distance and have had a great time the couple times we got to fish. The kids met new friends and a few summer fishing tips were exchanged.

I can not restate it better than Crusher stated it. The "uncrowded, pristene lakes up north" will soon be trashed with the same uncaring selfish individuals who have trashed local lakes.

That is my 2 cents...Crusher...I lost your e-mail shoot me an e-mail. The boys and I may be able to pull an overnighter on Friday night smile.gif

1st of all Sterns i did state in the post i have no problem of some one moving in cutting their holes a reasonable distance from me did i not? i also stated that the goof was INFORMED what the fish were doing . instead of setting up and getting in on the action he ruined it for not only myself but 3 other groups of fisherman .So if after being INFORMED this goof deceided to act the way he did any how .
Next Where did i say Anywhere i would run them over ?the goof moved his houseand i was going to drive right next to him yes. at least get it right. i said i would drive around his house yes . then i would drill holes all around him , yep i would . as far as you not beleiveing i would sink the guys truck on bowstring? all you need to do is find the 2 guys i was fishing with that day and the guy who owned the truck that moved on top of us.
bottom line here for everyone dont act like a jerk around others , there maybe another like me who dont have a problem giving the same jerk treatment back.. So now Sterns ,, anything you dont realy understand about being respectfull to others ? If not i am sure you will run across another jerk and hope you do soon to benifit the rest of us .
Also Sterns,i dont fish thye same area more than 3 days in arow even if i know the fish are there as not to be followed.. many times i am on a spot that there is noone else around amazed that there isnt any one moving in. So now Sterns since you have stated that you dont have any problem with folks moving in ,, share those places you fish . i am sure there is folks here that would be happy to give them a try even if you are there 1st grin.gif

Borch I totally aggree with your response. I have run into situations like this while fishing and while hunting ducks and deer. And I have learned the best way to handle things is to use common sense and a respectfull approach to a solution. Who knows maybe a fishing or hunting buddy may be formed through the whole incident.

Now lets all treat this forum with the same respect we all wish for.

Ok, you're both right.

As much as we'd like to think otherwise there will always be people out there that do things to irritate us. Like start up a generator and leave it running all day right next to us, have the stereo blaring right next to us. drilling hole with a power auger all around our spot, race snowmobiles/4 wheelers around our houses,... the list goes on.

We have the right to expect better of our fellow fisherman(as well as others on the ice). But there will always be those individuals who are ignorant to what they are doing or just don't care. This will be true not matter what you're doing in life.

What you can do is control how you respond to the situation. Keep a level head and do the right thing.

Two wrongs just make us both look bad.

Now let's carry that "respect" thing to this board as well.

Borch,
i do agree with you on this . i do think that i did approach this guy in a decent manner not cussing him out. What did the other 6 guys besides myself and my partner get back in return? we received the ignorance of, heck(not the word i prefer here) with you guys . was i bening a decent guy by telling him they scatter when drilling? i think so cause if you drilled b4 shooting(vex thru ice) thru the ice they were allready gone then and you would never know they were there at all. all any of us need to do is look back at the many posts this winter on how finicky or spooky the fish are this year to see if this was a truthfull statement.
in closing Borch i will say sorry that you had to edit my posting above. you shouldnt have had too so thanks . 1 should point out that their is one guy here that i have never met in person that had his house broke into.i went out found his house and now try to keep 1/2 eye on it . he mentioned that he hadnt been getting fish there . it is one of the better areas that i fish but thought he was a bit shallow and he is. i gave him this info without a thought.. you get out of life what you put in , in other words if you act wrongly towards others most times others will act wrongly towards you in return .

Rockhardinmn,

Hey no problem. I really believe that all of us are good guys and gals. We all get a little frustrated at times with the stuff that goes on. I chalk this all up to that. Nothing more.

On another note, the crappies were going again last night on a "secret Lake". Took my son out and caught one after another. Size was OK but numbers were great.

Caught them on small jigging raps, Angle eyes, Glow Demons and cicadas. Also on dead sticks tipped with minnows. The boy had a blast!

It should start getting good soon! grin.gif

Borch ,
i agree with the frustartion part of life . sure does make you do goofy crap at times .
fishing for the past week has been realy tough ,,poir to that all winter it has been real good to me , quite a few decent fish pound plus craps and tons of smaller. odd more me to hear about the little bigger baits you got them on . for me it has been glow deamons, red/blue glows ,few ratso type of baits , and small weighted fly fishing flys. the flys work great when the fish are so finicky like they have been most of the year .

glad you and your boy had a ball. thats what it is all about to start with . good luck to you and your boy smile.gif

Walked out about half a mile on Tuesday with max safety (life jacket, ice picks, long rope to house, and chisel).  Ice was very solid and I measured 7½" today (Thursday).  The first 1/8 mile was nice dark ice that was large chunks frozen together, but quite smooth.  Then there was about 40 feet of very jagged white ice.  Had to lift the portable over the points of ice otherwise it would hang up on them.  Then the next mile of ice was rough white ice as shown in the picture with the ice scoop.  At the small island before Birch Island the ice appears to be dark (and probably smoother).  Several snowmobiles and ATVs were running out as far as Birch Island but it was easy walking for me.   Fishing got better each day.  Rainbow and chubs were about equal.  Couldn't catch a fish on pike suckers.  Best fish was the 27" (8#-3oz) hog shown in the picture.  Had a hard time getting her head into the hole.  Picture quality is bad because I wanted to release her quickly to avoid further stress.  Good luck out there and be careful on the ice.

Measured 6" good clear ice today about 50 yards off the north side of Moccasin point. Walked out for a little ice fishing. Remember ice conditions vary around the lake, depending on sun exposure and current in channels/narrows. Be cautious, safe and verify your local ice conditions.  Directly off the Moccasin point boat landing, in the channel ice conditions looked poor. Picture is from Northside of Moccasin point I the early morning  when ice looks the best

Finished the 23 waterfowl season over Thanksgiving. Got to hunt two days of the long weekend. Saw a modest number of ducks, and harvested mallards, bluebills, and ringnecks as the water began freezing over during the weekend. One of our tougher seasons with different migration patterns probably due to unusual weather patterns with constant fluctuating between well above average temps for a period and then almost instantly well below temps before going well above again, and so forth. Still will cherish the memories with family and friends and relive the sights and sounds of out on the water during fall. Will be posting ice fishing reports in the fishing report clubs as soon as the ice is safe. Happy Holidays everyone.

Shocking, I know.  And what may be more surprising is that one need not head westward to find them either.  There is a thriving, reproducing population of them right here in Central MN.

Cosmo and I took the afternoon off and went pheasant hunting in the fresh snow yesterday.  Tried some new spots that I have never hunted before.  Raised 28 total.  I got a double at the second spot.  Two roosters flushed simultaneously and I dropped both of them.  The first one one fell dead but the second one went down as a cripple.  After retrieving the dead one, I went over to where the second one went down and after some good dog work, Cosmo came out of a patch of grass with it.  Then the final spot produced another rooster for a December limit.  Hunting after a fresh snow is quite often my most productive and enjoyable hunt of the entire season.
