I was talking about Pleasant near Rockville by the 400 Club, JIMBO- How deep of water were you fishing these crappies? and how big were they? when i was out they were pretty good sized, around 3/4 to a pound. I was catching them on waxies about 3 feet off the bottom, how were you getting them?

Jimbo: Nice to hear you are getting the time to fish, rather than hooking up vehicles through the ice. Bill

Where are you guys set up? I have gotten some nice ones on the corner just out of sight of the 400 club. Just wondering if this is the same place. Thanks.

Jimbo,

You underestimate some peoples ability to drive where no one in their right mind would go.

I just hope it's not me. shocked.gif

you guys are right on that account. Geeez I drove by Becker Lake the other day on the way to Paynesville. Man that looks weird with the aerator running and houses set up within 30 yds of the open water. Just knowing there is open water that close to me would get my undies in a major bunch. Bill

Do you find that alot of movement seems to scare the crappies away? they seem really spooky this year and will hit stuff that doesnt move as much, at least thats what it seems like for me, but how big of crappies are they that your getting, doing alot of sorting?

Oh yeh the fish will be on a big time bite
with the weather we are come in to.Yes they do seem to spook real easy,But not as much with a waxie.Seem to sort a few in the early evening but after 8:30&9:00 they all are good size 12-16 inches.the latest I have be out is midnight and they were still going strong but had my ten already.

I don't want to crowd in on anyone's hotspot, but I sure could use some help locating a school of crappies. My feezer is bare.

I have never fished Pleasant, any landmarks you could share, or better yet any GPS coords?

many thanks -

So would you feel intruded upon if I ventured out htat way? And if not, when you said the south end, are you talking way down off the south end close to Rockville Lake, or just along the southern side shoreline

Just remember that this is a small lake with a pretty limited resource. It won't tolerate a mass of anglers taking limits of crappies.

Other lakes in the area giving out good numbers of crappies right now are:

Big Lake near Richmond(20- 24 ft of water) away from the crowds. Also has eye potential.

Big Fish Lake - I've talked to two guys in the past week that have done pretty well there.

Becker Lake: Been a very good crappie and decent sunfish bite. Just stay away from the area marked for areation.

Julia: Both crappies and eyes have been going based on the reports I've been hearing.

No worries about me fishing out a hole, I am just after a big one. The rest get to go back and get bigger. I will eat one or two from time to time but thats it. The way I look at it, if the lake was good to you, be good to the lake. Let them go for another day! I would love to catch a 16 inch crappie....I am starting to tingle already!

Just curious, is the 5 and 10 limit on gills and crappies on Pleasant lifted, because the lake had that restriction from overharvest many years ago.

I believe the 5 fish limit is still in place but I'll have to check to make sure. The 10 crappie limit is statewide.

Actually the 5 fish limit was an experimental red to see it's effects on sunfish size. Not so much number. From what I've seen it hasn't had much of an effect on the lakes that it was used on.

Jimbo,

Just edited where the description of your house. Given the number of people who post and lurk in these forums you may very well not be able to get to your house with that type of report. I know you're just trying to be helpful. But here are literallu thousands of people cuising these forums each day. Feel free to click on my link to email me if you have any questions.

Good Luck this weekend.

jlm is right... unless you are living day to day, you shouldnt go to a little lake day after day and take eight limits of crappies... I know its illegal but people do it every day on a hot lake. I myself am headed out there now but I wont take more than four crappies home if they are that size... just catching them is enough!

Fished Pleasant all day and evening Saturday with little success. Lots of tiny gills and about 10 small craps all day. Biggest was about 10 inches. It was a vey light bite but the sweetheart rod performed very well which allowed me to catch a few. All went back in the drink to grow. Anyone do any better?

I spent several evenings on pleasant. Bite was very slow. Did catch 3 eyes(21, 14, 7")and a 6 crappies with the biggest being about 10". Tried a couple spots. Still couldn't beleive my first spot didn't hold more fish. Just that one 21" eye catch on my crappie pole(that was fun anyways). Didn't mark a single crappie there. Other spot I marked several fish flat to the bottom.

Jimbo,

Drop me an email thr next time you are heading out. Wish I could've stopped in to B.S. a little. The fish sure weren't biting.

here are a few of my favorites:   1) cube breast meat, marinate in Italian dressing over night, wrap in bacon, grill    2) cube breast meat, cover with shore lunch or any other breading batter of your choice, flour/egg wash etc if you like that, fry and enjoy just like little chicken nuggets   3) cube breast meat, season with salt, pepper, garlic, quickly fry in pan serve over rice, can also look up  South Dakota version of chislic similar to this   4) cream of something soup, crock pot with what ever you want lol   5) pheasant and dumpling soup   6) this one is a little bit of work but good stuff: https://fromfieldtoplate.com/2016/08/16/sesame-pheasant-garden-veggie-stir-fry/   I tend to save all my legs and prepare them together. For example this last weekend I shot 2 birds on Sat and 3 on Sunday for a total of 10 legs. Put them all in a crock pot, with beefbroth and a can or 2 of dr pepper to make sure they are call covered. cook on low until tender. pull all tendons etc out and shred any meat you can salvage. add  barbeque sauce and serve on a bun and toppings of your choice. will be very similar to pulled pork.   I hate wasting legs, and I hate even more seeing others not utilize them and just breast out birds and leave the legs to rot     My team of GSP's have been putting the hurt on birds this year here in SD. pleasantly surprised with numbers after the brutal winter we had. probably had my best year of sharptail hunting that I can ever recall in my lifetime also.

read Jeff Sundins most recent report........even he's pretty leary about the state of current ice conditions..........

You can prepare/cook them pretty much any way you make chicken.  The taste and texture is very similar.  I'm sure I could do what Moose posted above with his grouse and the finished product would be almost identical.   My favorite recipe is a slow cook in a cast iron pot.  That takes some time because it requires cooking at low temperature for at least 90 minutes.  The finished product is very good.   Being that its so warm out, I might try grilling some here too.   I also give a few away each season.  My possession limit is triple the daily bag limit so its something I have to be mindful of before I go hunting again.

Walked out about half a mile on Tuesday with max safety (life jacket, ice picks, long rope to house, and chisel).  Ice was very solid and I measured 7½" today (Thursday).  The first 1/8 mile was nice dark ice that was large chunks frozen together, but quite smooth.  Then there was about 40 feet of very jagged white ice.  Had to lift the portable over the points of ice otherwise it would hang up on them.  Then the next mile of ice was rough white ice as shown in the picture with the ice scoop.  At the small island before Birch Island the ice appears to be dark (and probably smoother).  Several snowmobiles and ATVs were running out as far as Birch Island but it was easy walking for me.   Fishing got better each day.  Rainbow and chubs were about equal.  Couldn't catch a fish on pike suckers.  Best fish was the 27" (8#-3oz) hog shown in the picture.  Had a hard time getting her head into the hole.  Picture quality is bad because I wanted to release her quickly to avoid further stress.  Good luck out there and be careful on the ice.

Measured 6" good clear ice today about 50 yards off the north side of Moccasin point. Walked out for a little ice fishing. Remember ice conditions vary around the lake, depending on sun exposure and current in channels/narrows. Be cautious, safe and verify your local ice conditions.  Directly off the Moccasin point boat landing, in the channel ice conditions looked poor. Picture is from Northside of Moccasin point I the early morning  when ice looks the best

Finished the 23 waterfowl season over Thanksgiving. Got to hunt two days of the long weekend. Saw a modest number of ducks, and harvested mallards, bluebills, and ringnecks as the water began freezing over during the weekend. One of our tougher seasons with different migration patterns probably due to unusual weather patterns with constant fluctuating between well above average temps for a period and then almost instantly well below temps before going well above again, and so forth. Still will cherish the memories with family and friends and relive the sights and sounds of out on the water during fall. Will be posting ice fishing reports in the fishing report clubs as soon as the ice is safe. Happy Holidays everyone.

Thanks for sharing this exciting career opportunity with Orvis in the Minneapolis area. It's great to see companies looking for passionate individuals to join their team, especially in the world of fly fishing.
