Crappie record...can we break it?

Recommended Posts

There is an interesting discussion going on on the main ice fishing forum about the state record crappie. The question posed was this...will this record ever be broken? What do you guys think? What are the biggest craps you have ever seen in this area. The biggest I have ever taken in my short crappie catching career is a 15 and 1/2 incher. I know of larger ones being taken in the area. I have seen larger ones that would not bite. What do you think?

I would say it can be broken, i saw a 3lb 2oz crappie caught on an area lake so I would say they can get alot bigger than that.

I know of one caught on our lake during the fishing opener that was over 3lbs. I also had one on that had a mouth that could of eaily held a tennis ball. I learned that you need to reach down and get out of the hole not heave them up.

Yes I saw a 3 lber com3e out your lake too Chemist. Biggest I ever got weas 14.5" there.

I remember when I was in high school that someone got a crappie close to the state record and lost a bigger out of clearwater. The fishing pressure was unreal for a few weeks after that.

Chemist, Borch I will agree there are some big ones in this lake. The numbers have been taken down over the years but I did manage to see to 1 1/2 plus white crappies caught out there this winter. I remeber years ago catching 15-16 inch crappies out there on shiners, while fishing eyes. I also know Koronis still holds some dandy crappies.

I had big plans to go to Moose lake or Two Rivers today in search of that record breaking crappie, but the strong wind and falling temps scared me away. As far a the record actually getting broke will be a tough affair. It's my opinion that huge fish are huge for a reason, they don't fall for bait peirced with a lazer sharp hook. Of course, sooner or later somebody, somewhere will get one but I doubt it will be around here. My guess would be some backwater area that gets little or no pressure. Who really knows though? It's always fun to think about. If anyone is interested, the records for all game fish can be found on IGFA's web site. Check out the Minnesota musky record supposedly caught on a 4 lb tippet, I'd like to have seen that. Shannon

I think if it will ever happen it will be out of Upper Red Lake. THey are big and only getting older. We have caught a few over 15" off our lake and the biggest being 17".

I know a guy who caught one up there that went over 4 and he ate the dam thing. WHat a shame.

The pitiful display(I have other things to call it) of catch and keep out on the lake have desimated the large crappie population. Which is why I don't put the permanent out there anymore. It used to be where catching and releasing 50-60 crappies around a pound was common place. I think the last year I was out there If you got 20 in a weekend you were lucky. Like we had discussed on Sat. Icehawk, double limits and mass amounts of anglers have in my opinion destroyed the crappie pop. now the 'eye population is another story. Just need to have the right place for a dock.

The state record white crappie was broken on 7-28-02 it weighed 3#15oz The state record black crappie is 5 pounds and has been held since 1940 There has been a lot of discusion if this is even a legit record. I belive the white crappie record will be broke again. Most likely on a southern Mn. lake. The black crappie record on the other hand will most likely never be broke.

Thanks for sharing this exciting career opportunity with Orvis in the Minneapolis area. It's great to see companies looking for passionate individuals to join their team, especially in the world of fly fishing.

Shocking, I know.  And what may be more surprising is that one need not head westward to find them either.  There is a thriving, reproducing population of them right here in Central MN.

Cosmo and I took the afternoon off and went pheasant hunting in the fresh snow yesterday.  Tried some new spots that I have never hunted before.  Raised 28 total.  I got a double at the second spot.  Two roosters flushed simultaneously and I dropped both of them.  The first one one fell dead but the second one went down as a cripple.  After retrieving the dead one, I went over to where the second one went down and after some good dog work, Cosmo came out of a patch of grass with it.  Then the final spot produced another rooster for a December limit.  Hunting after a fresh snow is quite often my most productive and enjoyable hunt of the entire season.

Did you ever trade the 30-30?  If not would you consider selling?

Caught some crappies on the north end of Osakis on Nov 15th. Pulled from 25-27 feet. All laid on their side in the live well. All kept but one.

On the south end...   Ice continues to form and make progress on Lake of the Woods.  With that being said, it is going to take some time before it is safe and fish houses are out.  Resort ice guides have been out checking ice thickness, flying drones over the ice and basically staying on top of current conditions.   Back bays are locked up and there is some spearing for pike that has been happening.  Ice conditions even in back bays vary, so for safety, please work through resorts and outfitters.   Most of Big Traverse Bay is ice covered.  There are still patches of open water, some cracks that have opened up, etc.  This is typical for this time of year and it will be a bit yet before most can give the green light.     Lake of the Woods is big and there are many areas of the lake resorts and outfitters go out on.  Each business will be monitoring ice conditions in their area and make informed decisions when it is allowed to access the ice through their ice access and what weight limits will be allowed. Resorts and outfitters have started marking trails on the ice in bays and close to shore.  When it is time to get out on the ice, we encourage working through resorts and outfitters and staying on marked trails for safety. On the Rainy River...   The Rainy River is ice covered.  Local resorts and ice guides are monitoring ice conditions in areas of the river they offer ice fishing.  As you have read in this report previously, work through a resort or outfitter for safety reasons.      Up at the NW Angle...  The Angle is ice covered (as a whole).  Outfitters and ice guides have been marking ice trails.  The ice roads and trails are not open yet, but much of the ice has frozen smooth and is coming along very nicely. There are always areas throughout the winter where there is current up at the Angle so it is important to stay on the marked trails, both when they open up and throughout the ice fishing season, which goes through March, Mother Nature dependent on course.

Are you still planning on walking out there tomorrow? Has the ice actually thickened yet?
