Big Walleye's

Recommended Posts

Not sure if it's the moon or not, anyone else have good luck hooking into a big pig walleye.

A week ago I pulled in a 29" 18.5 inch girth fish, and just found out a buddy of mine was out last night and pulled in a 32" with a girth of 20.5". Same lake - almost the same spot.

We were actually fishing in 30 feet. Picked up 3 others that night from 30-33 feet. 16-18". I have been back twice since, and got skunked.

Just got lucky that night.

I wouldn't dream of cleaning something this big. If I thought I'd be catching something bigger I would have let her go. She's going on the wall.

I actually have a hard time cleaning anything over 3-4 lbs. I get sick when I look in a fish cleaning house, and you see the skeleton of a large walleye. Especially those that look like they were cleaned with a butter knife.

Yeah, I think I'll get a replica about that size too, wait maybe I'll make it a couple inches longer and girthier. I like a real mount better, because it is the actual fish that you caught, but to each his own. Very nice fat fish by the way, that is a sow!

Nice fish!! Congratulations on your success. That fish will bring back memories for life. Don't feel guilty for mounting it it is a true trophy.

I disagree... You measure the length and girth...snap a picture..bye bye.... and there are taxidermists that can take your picture and measurments and can get it within a 1/4 inch.. off your hand and body measurments.. Catch and Release... Besides... I am sure we have all seen those big walleyes mounted many years ago... they are falling apart... Replica's look better.. last forever...

I would agree with beckman on getting a mount of the real thing. In my eyes there is no better feeling than you thinking, that very fish did this and that when I caught it.

Everyone has a different opinion on the mounting thing. It's great that there are different options out there for people. The replicas are getting much better and a little cheaper.

It's true that replica mounts are more durable. But the real fish mount will last more than a lifetime if cared for properly. Now I'm done talking mounting options here.

Again I want to congratulate goldeneye on a very nice walleye. Let's not turn this into a debate on what to do with the trophies we catch. That was obviously not the intent of this particular thread.

Keeping one hawg like that won't hurt anything, but if you consistently keep them it would be a shame. One for the wall is enough. Beckman you always like to get the crowd excited. I think its good to have these discussions about certain issues, keep up the good work.

When you get in a situation like this, you are always unsure of what to do. Then I think back, and remember the other 10+lb walleye's I've caught and let go because I was going to get a graphite mount made of them.

Well' - I'm still thinking about it. That's why when this beauty came through the hole, I knew if I kept it, it would be just a matter of time before the taxidermist got her finished.

Thanks for all the support - the experience was incredible, and having this fish on my wall will make it all the better.
