Smallie,

What kind of info are you looking for? Walleyes? crappies? Let me know I should be able to help you out. I'll check back tonight.

Good Fishing!

I am not sure about the eyes but I heard the craps are biting. Nothing fast and ferious but its worth trying I guess. This lake has really good "big fish" potential as well. Let us know how you do!

The crappies are biting on the north end. Not as fast as earlier but they are still getting a few. Just look for the two groups of houses out there. They are getting a few walleye as well. A friend of mine got an eight pounder out there last week. I can't tell you exactly where as he is fishing by himself and wouldn't appreciate crowds by him because of me. Good luck and be carefull, I wouldn't go through the narrows as that is always dangerous out there!!!! The crappie bite is best during the daytime, they pretty much shut off at dusk!!

Just wondering where Two Rivers lake is. Any idea on how deep of water the crappies are biting in? Thanx -- Wog

Smallie,

The crappie bite has been the most consistant. The advise given by the others is right on. the N. end is the place to be. 22' give or take is the depth you want to start. Don't be afraid to get away from the croud and the noise. Fish the perimeter. As Merc posted the narrows can be dangerous, if you come off the public access stay along the W. shore. The bite has slowed a bit, but you will catch fish.

The walleyes have been biting in 18'-21' these fish have been on the smaller side. There are a couple of spots where they are fishing them into 30' and thats where the bigger fish have been coming from. The bite has been hit or miss.

Two Rivers is located 2 miles S. of Holdingford. There is access to the N. end of the lake {winter only} of off Co. Rd. 9 Turn by Seitz Stainlees head W. when the road turns S. go straight. It's just a cow path but with the lack of snow you can access the N. end of the lake. the public access is located on the W. side of the lake off of Co. Rd. 10

Just curious, who is this "local legand" your fishing with. Anyone we know?

Merc, Just wondering who you are? In your profile you listed Holdingford as a home town I am also from there.

Good Fishing!

Been out there a few times this year-so far it has been my most consistent lake of the winter. The bite for crappies seems to be a bit better in the morning, from about 6-8AM or so. Look for fish right around the two big groups of houses on the north end in about 23-25' of water. Later in the day they are still biting, but seem to be less active. As far as my evening trips, the fish are there, but the bite has been tough. Good luck!

I fished two rivers last night. We are in the north group of houses. Last nights bite was very slow. We were out for about 3 hours and only brought home 3 fish. It has really shut down in the last week. I would go out and search for them. Stay away from the crowd. Good luck

Is this lake any good for Northerns? I have three boys who love to catch northerns and are looking for a spot ot put our house this weekend. I was on Pearl but the ice went bad...

Kids like to catch crappies as well. We have a sleeper house so may stay over if the right lake.

Two Rivers is a good lake for northerns. What it lacks in numbers it makes up for in size. The N. end will provide entertainment for you and the kids.

Good Fishing!

Going against better judgement and the experience I've gained about Two Rivers in the last 3 weeks, we tried some night fishing on Wed. Yep, the bite is dead when the lights go out. I could bring the crappies to look at my jig, but getting them to bite was another story. The two locations posted earlier are correct, but they have become crowded lately, and I wonder if all the activity is pushing the fish deeper or away?

Thanks to all who posted replies to my questions on Two Rivers. The legend and I were out for about 13 hours on Sat!

we started out fast and furious...first line went down the hole about 7ish and true to form, the legand had put me on fish right away. Dropped a minnow down....30 seconds later brought up the first Crappie. Needless to say, I was quite impressed. The bite was on. We put 16 Crappies in the bucket between then and about 10:30AM. Had a handfull of small Perch to play with along the way as well. We were in the second group of houses on the north end of the lake. Second from the north shore that is. 22-24' of water...crappies came in at about 17-18 feet.

Once the clouds cleared, sun came out, wind picked up, temp started to drop, the Crappies went away. Soldiered on all day and into the eve but only managed one more crappie, a gill and assorted perch. No wallys, snakes, etc. Finially packed it in 'bout 8. Temp was 28 at 7AM when we started and 4 at 8PM when we finished along with about a 25mph wind. No matter...it was a great day for this So. MN boy who hadn't fished through the ice in almost 20 years. Loved it. Hoping to do it all over again next weekend...heck, wishing I could do it all over again tomorrow!!!

Thanks again to all for the info...

PS, at the request of the "local legend" I can't divulge his identity or I'd have to shoot you. Just look for the guy always "on the bite" and you'll find him.

Smallie,

Glad you had a great time. I noticed your from Pine Island, back in 1981 we played you for the state football championship. I remember it being a long trip down there. I'm glad the trip was worth it.

Good Fishing,
Paul

Hey smallie obsession, I noticed you'll be coming up again this weekend, being you left all you're fishing gear in my truck. Well planned idea if I do say so myself. To the rest of you FM'ers, this is my first post so I'll leave you with a bit of info. Crappies are supposed to be jumping out of the water on lake Mary. I got this info from a very reliable source.
I really like this site and will try to be a regular.
P.S. I am not a legend. Just your average, as much as possible fisherman.

Sounds like a good day out on the hard water. I am not familiar with the holdingford area but would love to give two rivers a try if anyone is interested in teaming up for a trip. I am planning on fishing wednesday at big fish, but I am always willing to fish a daytime bite like two rivers(i cant buy a crappie on big fish until dusk). Ill check back regularly to see if anyone is game.

Paul, sorry I didn't answer your post as to who I am but I just walked in from a four day golf trip to Laughlin. I fish with a lot of your muzzel loading hunting partners, Dave, Randy, Larry, Jack and even golf with your brother once in a while. I got "merc" from my old days of running, now I get tired walking to the Muni for a beer!!! Grew up fishing those crappie on Two Rivers before I had a drivers license I would drive the "Scorpion" snowmobile down the river. If you aren't sure yet I am Jerry M. that should do it!! Good luck on the water!!!

Hey Wally, I did realize that I left my gear in your truck about the time I was pulling in the driveway. Not sure yet on this weekend, have to see what's up with the young'un but if there's a way, I'm there. You think you can get a pass again for at least part of the day on Sat? I'd likely have to be back in St. Cloud 3-4ish for the big Bday doin's.

Jerry,

Thanks for the post. I don't see to many guys from Holdingford on here. It got my curiosity up. I remember the {good ole days} out there, the crappies were much bigger! Hope you had a great trip!

Fished Mary (St. Marys) as us locals call it earlier in the season. Did get a few crappies but the size was very small with a few "keepers" mixed in. Haven't heard if the size is better now, but from past experience don't expect them to be big. Have heard there are a lot of houses out there now so I will head elsewhere. Good luck!!!

I fished Two Rivers today, in 21 ft water. I saw fish, but could not get them to bite. Tried everything short of snagging them.

I fished Two Rivers on Thursday afternoon and did manage to get 3 decent sized crappie. The fish were caught using a Buck Shot jiging minnow, I tried everything in my tackle box and this was the only thing that worked for me. It's hard to tell if it was the lure or the fact the I caught them all within 5 minutes of each other, but I didn't expect the Buck Shot to work. I'm going out again in a few minutes to see if today might bring better results. Shannon

go look at the talmoon thread.....kettles got a good report.    earlier last week i guy from another address reported anything from no ice over by leech lake then closer to grand rapids from 2 to 2 1/5 to 5 inches !!!!!!

Caught some crappies on the north end of Osakis on Nov 15th. Pulled from 25-27 feet. All laid on their side in the live well. All kept but one.

On the south end...   Ice continues to form and make progress on Lake of the Woods.  With that being said, it is going to take some time before it is safe and fish houses are out.  Resort ice guides have been out checking ice thickness, flying drones over the ice and basically staying on top of current conditions.   Back bays are locked up and there is some spearing for pike that has been happening.  Ice conditions even in back bays vary, so for safety, please work through resorts and outfitters.   Most of Big Traverse Bay is ice covered.  There are still patches of open water, some cracks that have opened up, etc.  This is typical for this time of year and it will be a bit yet before most can give the green light.     Lake of the Woods is big and there are many areas of the lake resorts and outfitters go out on.  Each business will be monitoring ice conditions in their area and make informed decisions when it is allowed to access the ice through their ice access and what weight limits will be allowed. Resorts and outfitters have started marking trails on the ice in bays and close to shore.  When it is time to get out on the ice, we encourage working through resorts and outfitters and staying on marked trails for safety. On the Rainy River...   The Rainy River is ice covered.  Local resorts and ice guides are monitoring ice conditions in areas of the river they offer ice fishing.  As you have read in this report previously, work through a resort or outfitter for safety reasons.      Up at the NW Angle...  The Angle is ice covered (as a whole).  Outfitters and ice guides have been marking ice trails.  The ice roads and trails are not open yet, but much of the ice has frozen smooth and is coming along very nicely. There are always areas throughout the winter where there is current up at the Angle so it is important to stay on the marked trails, both when they open up and throughout the ice fishing season, which goes through March, Mother Nature dependent on course.

'we have more fun' I Share On FishingMN  152 Posted January 25, 2017 Hey Moose ... what size Pug Bug do you typically use?  Smaller or bigger on your locale lake?   also, do you use the xl maki minnow or the smaller regular one?  For Crappies, noticed that the xl seems to catch bigger fish but not as much quantity?  Curious about your thoughts?
    • Kettle
I caught a few eyes... we're getting a dusting of snow tonight. I probably won't fish much until we get more ice and snow as I like running the sled. Really don't like ice fishing much, do it more for something to do as there's not much to do in the winter. I'm going to start bobcat trapping this winter though
