Spunkin' anyone?

Recommended Posts

Anyone from this site been to, or have anything to say about Middle or Big Spunk?

Drive by it on my way to Fargo everyday and see fishhouses..."and I wonder?"..."hmmm", I say...

Grew up in Avon near the spunk chain but haven't ice fished it for a few years, live in minnecrapolis now. On both middle and upper there is great walleye action, good structure to both lakes. Have also gotten into crappies and northerns too, but there are always big walleyes taken out in the winter.

Went Fishing this Saturday on Kramer Lake near St. Joe. Caught 3 Crappies, they were keepers but to do the sportsman thing i threw them back so they could get a little bigger. My partner also caught two crappies. We were set up right off the St. Joe rod and gun club access in about 30 foot of water. The Crappies are sitting in about 12-17 foot of water. They were all over the vexlar but seemed to be only active during the afternoon bight. They were a little finiky later on and would sit by the bait and pick at it. I would jig it once or twice and that brought out a response. I was using a small jig with a crappie minnow. I also spent a day on Little Spunk last week but nothing was biting there. Anyone else been on Kramer or the Spunks? If so, whats working best and where at? The bite on Little Spunk is not to well, only caught a 2 pound northern on a sucker minnow and a tip-up in about 25 ft water. I havent ventured to big or upper yet, planning to get there soon. Ill let ya know what happens.

I recently moved to Avon and am trying to figure these lakes out as well. Tough bite on middle but I have not fished it too much yet. I have heard from the locals that it is a great trophy eye lake but numbers of fish are tough to find. I suspect there has to be some craps in there to so I guess I will keep looking. If anyone is interested in hooking up over the weekend to scout things out a little let me know. Good luck!

I grew up in Avon about 2 blocks from Middle Spunk... and have fished both middle and upper quite heavily...

Middle is all right for panfish.. don't expect anything huge but from time to time you can catch quite few... the crappies are there, but usually are hard to find and don't stay in one spot very long.

I've never fished Upper in the winter... but have fished it quite heavily during the summer for walleyes with varying success. I used to catch quite a few panfish out there around the reed island.. but haven't fished for panfish on it for some time (5 years or so).
