Trout Fishing?

Recommended Posts

Where are some good places to fish for trout in the St Cloud area. I'm attending school here at St Cloud, and I do not know much about trout fishing here. I do a lot of fishing at our cabin on the Horseshoe Chain though. Thanks a lot.

Coleman-
I know there are stocked trout in the QUARRY PARK holes but I couldn't tell you which ones or how many etc. Since you know the horseshoe chain area so well,...just up on the other end of Cold Spring give Big Watab a shot. This lake is stocked with rainbows and browns and people catch 2 pound rainbows every year. That's all I can tell you although if there are trout to be found around these parts someone on this board will tell you where. Troy

PS. Of course there is also Molitor's trout haven in Sartell if you want to check them out. Good luck.

I know about Big Watab. But isnt that a deep lake. So I would have to use like flashers, and spinners. I would rather fly fish. Just more fun to me. I heard that they stock the Quarry lakes, but I'm not sure what to use, or which ones have fish. I'm going to go the the DNR office this week and pick up a map. Thanks a lot. Where is this place in Sartel? Is it like a kiddy pond? I want some sort of a challenge. smile.gif Thanks for you help.

coleman-
I have fished big watab a lot and in the summer I troll with walleye divers or fish with a night crawler and do very well.Towards evening I have always wanted to bring a fly rod out because they surface every were I have never tried it but I would think you would do well. I mostly fish them in the winter I'll be out there every day when it opens or the ice is safe. (wife permitting)

Coleman,
Most of the quarry lakes have trout in them. When you go to the park, you can pick up a map which shows you where they are and which ones have fish. I plan on giving them a try this winter through the ice as well as Big Watab. Unfortunately, there are no trout streams in the area, closest one is up near Brainerd. Anyway, good luck.

There are a few trout streams here in the St. Cloud area. I don't fish them myself but have a friend who has. I'll touch base with him during the nexrt week to see what I can find out. I know there are a couple around south Haven, One in Cold Spring and one around Royalton but don't know the exact streams. None of these is a lock as far as getting into the trout but they are there. Still think your best bet is Big Watab or the Quarries. There is a fly fishing and trout fishing group in the St. Cloud area. Stop in at Gander and see if anyone knows about them. They will have the inside scoop.

Best of Luck!

Hey sjogren do you think we could get together some time and try ice fishing for trout. I would love that, if you dont mind. I have never fished for trout through the ice. I have only fished for them in stream and rivers out west. GullGuide, I will try to get out there and pick up a map. I still gotta get my trout stamp. And sense we are on the subject. What are the open seasons for trout. Thanks a lot guys, you have been a huge help.

Hey! Anyone ever fish Little Mud Lake? It looks like it's just south of Horseshoe. According to the DNR, they stock rainbow trout every year. I was going to check it out last year, but didn't get a chance. Vern

Coleman,
Inland stream Trout fishing is closed for the season. A winter catch and release season begins in January in designated SE MN streams only.
Trout do their thing this time of year!
You can catch trout up to the first falls in a lot of the LAke Superiors tribs, but not all. Please familiarize yourself with the fishing regulations manual on all species seasons.

You can find it at www.dnr.state.mn.us

Coleman --

Stearns County has trout streams south of St. Cloud in the Fairhaven area. Several guys I know do very well, but there is an access problem. The DNR regs show where the streams are located.

sjogren--
I'll give you a email in the future. When are some good times to go out and try it? And what type of tackle do you use through the ice? Do you use the same type of stuff as walleye fishing, except with different bait? Thanks a lot.

Thank you very much for the info on the trout stockings. I'm going to try out Watab as soon as I can this summer. Can't wait to get out there and try some trout fishing.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
