Big Birch

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, been gone awhile and been getting geared up for Duck Hunting this weekend. I haven't gotten out on the water much except of few more days on Leech this week. Fishing up North was pretty good, but cold and wet. I think I have been putting a few to many hours on the deer stand. After this weekend I will be getting back on the water, looking forward to those big fall piggies! I can't remember who caught the 12 inch Bluegill, but that would be a state record I believe! Well, this is the time of year to get them, so don't go putting those boats away. See ya all on the water real soon. ScottS

What is it they say about a bad day on the water versus a good day at work?
Well, the weather cooperated this time but the fish still didn't. I managed to bring a few panfish home but even they were slow going and when they did bite they were small, real small.
While playing with my camera in "hunters bay" a walleye swam slowly right across the lens in six feet of water with my outboard idle-ing! I could not believe it! I was searching for some larger sunfish and all of a sudden out of the weeds comes this white tipped torpedo, real casual like. I couldn't kill the motor, wrap up the cable and bait up a shiner fast enough. This all happened at 12:30 in the afternoon on a bright sunny day?! What gives?
I did manage one nice largemouth besides the sunnies but where are those walleyes? And don't anyone try and tell me they are catching walleyes in six feet of clear water,in the middle of the afternoon on a sunny calm day in "hunters bay".
And another thing,...last year at this time it wasn't possible to go fishing on Big Birch and not have those toothy critters bite off about three hooks a trip. This year I haven't seen but two of those slimy monsters. Josh-I just may go golfing on friday instead of fishing.I guess I could work---YEAH RIGHT!!!!
talk at you all later--Troy

guys
In my self-absorbed world I almost forgot to mention that you may want to pack your waders in the future. They towed the fishing pier to hunters bay for the winter and I'd be willing to wager they will be pulling the landing docks soon.

I was out yesterday on Big Birch and really hammered the pigs up in 6ft of water, right in the middle of the day! Just kidding Troy! Big Birch, like any other lake has walleye the primarily (majority of the year)live in that shallow water. I refer to them as "weed fish". Some walleye find comfort in deep structure and some find comfort in the weed lines. You don't hear about these fish that often because they are very hard to fish. But, talk to some of the bass fisherman and they will tell you lots of stories about getting bass year around hitting there spinnerbaits and Texas/Carolina rigs. As for where the majority of the walleye are? Deep! The best is yet to come and they will turn on very quickly. When they do, you know where to find them, if you don't, come look for me.ScottS

Josh, just teasing about the state record. I am an avid bluegill fisherman and use the term sunnie and bluegill for the same fish, just old habit. This past year we did get several gills up to 10 3/4 inches and 1 lb 8 oz. The reason I was teasing you is because a 12 inch bluegill should way well over 2 pounds. I hope you got some great pictures because, personally, I have never seen a 12 inch bluegill alive and would love to see it sometime. Congrats on a true trophy! ScottS

Hi Guys!
I was out on B.B. yesterday,...WOW, what a day to be on the water! The walleyes didn't skunk me this time around so I feel better and I can't remember a nicer day on the water weather wise.
The fishing is starting to come around but the panfish are still real finicky.I was playing around in "hunters bay" and sunfish were more readily biting minnows than they were worms. This didn't surprise me because I sometimes fish for big sunnies with "fatheads" on Birch and do pretty well. It seems the BIG boys aren't quite ready to eat yet but the action was pretty fun.
Speaking of action,....if you belong to that other breed of fishermen -the bass are poppin everywhere!! Especially the smallies on the underwater weed edge in 18-20 feet. Go get 'em. You just might catch something that tastes good at the same time.
I wish my schedule would allow me another day to play but I need to catch up on the yard work. Keep me posted on the walleye and panfish bite--Troy

P.S. I've got nothing against bassers it's just I fish to chill, and all that casting, and casting, and casting,....my arms need a break!!!!

I haven't been on B.B. in a week but here is what I've noticed about this forum. When no one takes the time to post how the fishing has been it's because they're to busy fishing? Well? Don't tell me you guys are all mowing the lawn.

Aqua Eye,
I would be willing to bet a lot of money that most people's lawns are looking pretty lousy in the month of October. I don't think everyone is out fishing, I think they are out waterfowl hunting, like I am with all the free time I have. Also, there are probably a lot of bowhunters that post on this forum. Personally, I wish October was a little longer so I could take advantage of both the hunting and the fishing opportunities.

SA- You got that right! Bowhunting, Waterfowl hunting, getting the dog ready for pheasant hunting, lots of things to do in October, so little time. The boat has not seen the water for over a week now and I am sure it is wondering what is going on. But, hopefully next week I will get back out on the pond to chase some of those fall pigs!ScottS

Josh-good news is you are well enough to work.Same as the BAD news, right? I heard that the panfish on Sauk were still hitting late last week from a friend at work.
I will be up in Pequot Lakes this Saturday and hope to bend a rod or two but it may be a few days before I get out on birch again. I've been way to busy lately, time for things to slow down a little bit.Nice to hear from you --Troy

Hi Guys- I just thought a little post was in order. I was on B.B. yesterday and did o.k.
Much better than it had been for me in September anyway.I was fishing for walleyes off of "Crackers Point" and did real well early morning while the wind was south-easterly. Quite a few nice largemouth to keep things interesting too!
Later in the day I checked out some other spots to see if I could mark any large schools. One spot had nice walleyes roaming the rocks in 14ft of water. I watched them on camera as I drifted accross the area.I was surprised to see them up on top like that because it was mid-day but I guess seeing is believing right? I wasn't able to coax any of those girls into biting though,...I was kinda bummed because they were nice fish. There were a lot of little round looking "cisco" or "sunfish frye"cruisin near the rocks in this area and my guess is the walleyes had as much as they wanted when ever they wanted it. I'll be back again to give them a try. ---Troy

PS. There were a lot of boats out yesterday, I guess not as many people hunt as what a guy thinks, huh? Josh?SA?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
