Saturday wasn't a bad day of fishing. It
rained twice an hour and the wind changed
directions every 45 minutes.
But it didn't rain much and the wind wasn't
blowing real hard. I think when you are
fishing deeper water these changes in the
weather aren't such a big deal.
There has been a real good bite right out
of the Lighthouse Gap anywhere from 20 to
30 feet of water for several days last
week. Saturday wasn't a barn burner but
there was fish there willing to bite.
My Wife and I used the downriggers for a
while and did ok. The wind went away for
so I pulled out the lead core rods
and we trolled with them for a short while
with no success. It stayed flat so we
vertical jigged with minnows and caught
3 Saugers in 15 minutes. Next, we used the
kicker motor to backtroll spinners and
caught about 3 more smaller fish. We finished up with the riggers and quit for
the day with 8 nice keepers from 14 to 19
inches and about 25 throwbackers.
I talked to a friend of mine who has been
NE of Long Point pulling plugs for a month
now and is still doing real well downrigging.
Better average size of fish. That is a
real good area out there.
It was fun to fish with a jig and minnow
again. Peak time for that is only a few
short weeks away.
------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio
[This message has been edited by curt quesnell (edited 09-06-2004).]

Made a quick trip before the weekend rush on Vermilion. Ice was in very good condition. Didn't see any slush or water on any of the roads out from McKinley Park. There are plowed roads on both side of the staked snowmobile trail coming out from the landing. The road to the left goes out toward Birch Island, and there is a spur road going to the left (west) a couple hundred yards out. The road on the right side goes out toward Ely Island. There is a short spur road going east about half mile out. The water came up under my fish house about another 1½ inches when I drilled my holes. Looks like I will be going back up early next week to block my house up higher. The small amount of new snow is really drifting up and adding weight. You may get water on the ice, or find slush if you drill holes in new areas. There is about 15% bare ice where the wind has blown it off. Many of the drifts are very high and hard, so you could get stuck on them. Fishing was average. Best bites were from 9-10am and 11-1230 when I quit. Biggest walleyes was only 16¼", then the next biggest was 13.75". Reporting lengths in quarter inches because I can't seem to find any big walleyes. Good luck fishing, be careful driving around, and be courteous to others.
