Finally the time has come to venture to god`s part of the world. Just wanted to get some feedback on the status on the lake. I know you don`t personally fish Star much, but your usually on the pattern`s at the time. So what`s going on up there? Are the bull`s on the bed`s yet? I would like to get the kid`s on some of those hulk like pannies. They are a blast in anybody`s boat. I did get my fish back from last year`s trip and she is really pretty. Now ALL THOSE BIG FEMALES GO BACK. Really pumped to get up there. My 10 year old daughter even asked if she had fresh line on her reel`s for the trip. Sweet! If you or anybody else reading have some updated info for us, it`s always appreciated. Thanks Flip

Hey flip! As of tuesday night I'm still lindyrigging shiner minnows in 16 to 24 ft of water, they have been outdoing the "tubbed" baits 4 to 1 in my boat, the spinner/crawler leech thing I think should be going by this weekend. Water temps were running 64 to 66 degrees and the deeper weedlines are starting to show up decent. find a windblown edge and go to work! You did it last summer! Yes the gills are bedding too.MMMMMMM lolo Have a fun trip !!! Paul

Flipnripem,
Had some clients on Star last sat. We found some nice fish in 8-12' weed lines. The weather was cloudy and 15 mph wind from the east.I agree with Paul, this weekend with sun and light wind look a little deeper and stay with light fireballs and golden shiners. Noticed there was quit a bug hatch, so might be time to try the crawlers, leech rigs.Good Luck and enjoy !

Thanks guy`s, this is why I enjoy spending my time on the FM website. People are always willing to stick there neck`s out for a fellow fisherman. Nine day`s straight on the water is never enough! Saturday start`s out with a bass tourny on a local sweet spot. I do believe I`ve got them pinned down, and that`s a good way to start a tourny day! As soon as I get home it`s load the kid`s in the van and a six hour road trip to heaven. May even look you up this year. My inlaw`s converted the lake house to a permanent and installed a dell. Thanks again, Flip

Fellas, I just finally got back to reality today. Man wordk does cut into a guy`s fishing time. Picture perfect weather for a jet skier or a sun seeker. Don`t get me wrong I did enjoy the weather and the kid`s caught a ton of gill`s. Most of them went back for a trip this fall? Bass have my number on this lake? Is it possible that a lake with awsome weed lines and perfect habitat for bass doesn`t hold a fishable population of bass? Anyhow, some part`s of the lake have a good jump on summer. The cabbage is coming along good. If you could find a thick patch, there were a lot of fish of all species. Yep even the bullheads were on the bite. I had a hard time with the eye`s untill fri. The wind blew a bit, I`d guess 25 to 30 for three day`s in a row. That really positioned the fish. Pretty tough to stay on them consistantly. Managed a limit on sat. and a bunch of them snake`s. Did pull the boat on thur. and went to Dead for the day. Nice water and plan to get back again someday. Sorry I don`t have any big fish storie`s, but again it is a treat to able to fish the lake`s area. P.S. why does a guy that fished 10 day`s straight want to get back on the water the next day? Flip

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
